Any thoughts on running a S&B air intake without the see thru cover?

Go for it. Most people run the 6637 and it's open to the elements. I run a s&b filter open to the atmosphere with a custom intake tube. No problems here.

why would you want to do that? Just curious?

I am not a huge fan of the "closed" box-style intakes. I don't know if there is research to back it up, but I feel like it limits airflow. It also quiets the turbo down greatly. I run a 6637 and the minute I put it on I could literally hear and feel the truck breathing much better. Plus its just a lot less expensive option....(though it sounds like you already own the S&B)

I like having the cover on mine. Keeps warm engine air out and keeps the filter cleaner. If you are worried about flow, don't be. The S&B kit not only receives air from the front inlet, but also from the fender.

When I ran the 6637, I had an issue with a mold/mildew type material on the paper filter. Any water that would get between the hood and fender would end up on the filter. That was my biggest complaint with it.

I have heard about this, I also have the riff faff pre filter and it helps a fair amount. the key too is using a really high quality filter.

S&B with the lid will flow plenty and help keep the filter dry and cleaner. No real reason not to run a closed intake in my opinion

Unless you really like hearing your turbo....which I must admit I do...

I thought the same thing tell I pulled a trailer from Illinois to Colorado. It drove me nuts.

Yep. That was another side effect of the 6637. Crazy loud with my 38R. It was cool at first, but it sure got old. It is still somewhat noisy with the S&B, but drastically less than the 6637. Much more manageable, and I can actually drive 100 miles without hearing a whistle in my ear five minutes after I hop out of the truck LOL
