I'm doing this exact swap right now. From what I have learned and can confirm next week is that the transmission itself will bolt right up, however the clutch will not. Apparently the flywheel mounts are different from an IDI to a powerstroke as well as the diameter. The powerstoke has a 13" flywheel and the IDI has a 12.75" flywheel, each having different bolt spacing where they mount on the crank.

Also make sure the tranny you have is for a 2x4 or 4x4, whichever your truck is as they are different from 2x4 to 4x4.

 

Ive been told the shaft is bigger for a psd too than an idi

 

The right clutch and flywheel for the PSD should take care of that, no? It's kind of a given that with a manual tranny swap, unless the donor is known to be nearly new and high quality, a new single-mass flywheel and clutch is in order.

 

So it's only worth it if it I get the trans for free?

 

The s42-ZF5 diesel trans is identical between the idi and the powerstroke. No difference at all. AKA direct bolt on

You will need a powerstroke flywheel and clutch though. Both have a 10 bolt pattern but they are different

 

Okay, well that seems simple enough. I can get 20% off at south bend clutch because of work so I might have to do that. I've always liked a manual more than an auto

 

I did the IDI to PDS conversion in My 93 CC
Lose the Auto Flexplate Spacer and make sure you have the big Spacer for the Bell Housing...

The powerstroke and IDI use a cast iron spacer that bolts to the back of the engine

Ummm I have a 97 PSD doing auto to IDI ZF5 and the auto from a 97 PSD has a iron spacer!

My question is, will the 97 spacer work with the IDI tranny.
I tried putting the IDI spacer on and it won't clear the timing cover......

 

I believe you need the correct spacer for the engine.

BTW the timing cover is on the FRONT of the engine, hope you are not trying to mount the trans there

 

Believe it or not, that's where the tranny was on my wife's Le Car....

 

But not with ANY powerstroke
