EGT sensor problem

My 08 6.4 with 53k miles has a bad egt sensor giving me the "pullover safely now" screen and my dealer wants $357 to replace it. Is this not under the 100k diesel warranty and also if it isn't how hard is it to replace and where exactly is it.

Thanks,

Thanks,
It should be under the 100k warranty, however..........

The dealer price sounds high, especially if this is one of the sensors in the exhaust. I know those can be had for $40 or so online, and really aren't hard to put in.

EXACTLY what code(s) are you throwing?

Re: EGT sensor problem

should take about an hour

take the passenger side inner fender well out
spray the sensor with some W-D40 it will pretty damn snug, so having it hot from running is a plus
disconnect it from the top. its a plug toward the back of the passenger side valve cover.

hit up 25% discount on ford parts to members - PowerStrokeNation they are a vendor here and will give you a better price on the sensor then you would at the dealer you would go to

Re: EGT sensor problem

Aparently there are two sensors, part numbers 12B591 which is under the warranty and 5J213 which isn't. Mine happened to be the one which wasn't. I already paid it and left because i need my truck but i wish i knew where it was and i would have changed it.

Re: EGT sensor problem

I can get you a pic of the 3 easy to change sensors, the one BFT is talking about i might be able to get you a pic of that one when i get my head off. might be awhile till i get to that. I will go dig my head out of my stock pile and be back in a few.

Re: EGT sensor problem

Both EGRT sensors and all three EGT sensors are covered under the 5/100k warranty. Sounds to me like your dealer is jerking you around.

Regardless, if you decide to change it yourself, one thing i would like to add is soak whatever one your replacing overnight with PB blaster. This helps with the ones that want to pull the threads of the "bung" out when you go to unscrew them.

Also, cut the old sensor off right at the top and use a 6 point socket on it. They tend to be tight to break free and an open end wrench will round them off. Another trick on the three in the exhaust can be to use a line wrench, but then put vice grips on the line wrench after it is on the sensor to keep it from opening up and rounding it off. You cant do this very easily on the EGRT1 sensor in the passanger side up pipe though.

You can do the EGRT1 sensor without pulling the inner fender well, but it is kind of a pain.
