Why the EBPS/EBPV tube needs to be cleaned

First off, my EBPV has been disconnected at the plug on the turbo pedestal for about a year with no ill effects. I had been under the impression that once disconnected, the valve and sensor were essentially turned off. This is true of the valve but not the sensor. If you search for info about the sensor you will find statements that the sensor may also control the fueling tables in the PCM. Based upon my experience this is definitely true.

First off, here are the symptoms I was experiencing that led me to start searching for answers on here:
1. The truck would randomly shift into high idle after it was warmed up.
2. Intermittent weird idle. Not bad enough to be a concern on its own, but taken in conjunction with the other symptoms it indicated something was wrong. In fact, I initially blamed this on the gray cps.
3. Mileage progressively getting worse.
4. SOTP feeling when the TC locked up that the motor wasn't running as smooth as it should.
5. SOTP feeling that I'd lost some power along the way.

I did the Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor and Tube cleaning procedure found here on Guzzle's website:
Welcome to guzzle's Exhaust Backpressure Sensor Cleaning Maintenance Web Page

Couple of notes on the above procedure: Next time I'll soak both tube nuts with PB Blaster before I start. The bottom one was especially tough to get off. I ran some wire through the tube but did not feel the need to roto-rooter it with a drill. I found it impossible to reinstall the tube from the bottom - I guess Guzzle is better at finding holes in the dark than I am . I positioned the tube from the top, finger-tightened the bottom nut then connected the top nut.

What I found was the sensor orifice was more than half blocked with soot. More importantly, the sensor bracket was completely clogged with soot. Took more than a pipe cleaner to get it clean. I've attached pics of the sensor before cleaning and the bracket after cleaning. I should have snapped a pic of the bracket before cleaning it but I didn't realize how bad it was til I started digging into it.

Test-drive results...OMG, the gradual degradation in power and throttle response was worse than I thought. Drives like a completely different truck.

Perhaps I wasn't searching using the correct terms, but it took me a while to come up with enough info to convince me to do this procedure. Hopefully, I titled this thread correctly and it will help some other guys out.

Also, I noticed in my search that a number of people asked where the plug for the EBPV is. I've included a pic of it taken from the passenger side. It's white and has a piece of electrical tape on it.

Best,
Jim

Guess this is something I could check on my truck even though I deleted my ebpv pedistal..

Re: Why the EBPS/EBPV tube needs to be cleaned

Any other symptoms Jim? I got AE last week and noticed that my exhaust back pressure reading is 43.5 psi all the time, whether the truck is running or not. How long did it take you to get this done? I am wondering if some of my truck problems might be this. Thanks for any info!

I should have gotten a back pressure reading with AE before I did this job...didn't think about that! Sorry, but I don't know what a normal reading is; if nobody posts an answer by tomorrow, I'll let you know what mine reads then. I will add that it doesn't make sense to me why your value is constant; if it was supposed to be then we wouldn't need this whole contraption.

Rancher, the symptoms I listed were the main ones I experienced. I can't emphasize enough how much different the truck drives now. I could swear its quieter too, but don't quote me on that one. I guess that was the hard part for me cause the symptoms were subtle, and by themselves, not all too significant. It wasn't til after that I realized how much effect a clogged sensor/tube was having on my truck.

Took me about 1.5 hours including giving PB Blaster time to work in. I'm sure most people could bang it out in about 30-60 minutes; I'm still learning so don't laugh at how long it took me!

White, that was one of the lessons I took out of this - Just cause the EBPV is disconnected or deleted doesn't mean this thing won't give you any more trouble. I would, at a minimum, take the sensor off and see what you can see. It was immediately obvious to me when I did that I had found my problem.

Best,
Jim

Re: Why the EBPS/EBPV tube needs to be cleaned

Took me a while to understand that the EBPV and EBP sensor are not really part of the same system. The sensor under the pedistal controls the valve. The sensor on the front of the motor controls a lot more than the valve.

Mine is disconnected and the truck runs fine, if I plug it in, the truck instantly dies. Something I need to fix one of these days.

Re: Why the EBPS/EBPV tube needs to be cleaned

What is the benfit of having the EBPV disconnected? I though it helped warm up? Is it the reason why if I take off cold I dont build boost? It seems everytime I dont let the truck warm up, it doesnt want to build boost and when it does, it dumps it ASAP

Re: Why the EBPS/EBPV tube needs to be cleaned

ctc deezul, that has more to do with the programming than anything, iirc.

Mine does that still even with the ebpv unplugged. Its part of the cold start parameters in the pcm. I still have highidle even though I dont have the ebpv.

Re: Why the EBPS/EBPV tube needs to be cleaned

I am currently running a 85/175 trq tune... I had it on a 40HP tow tune the other day and it did worse when cold...

Me too Andy. That's why I thought I'd write this thread. Might help someone else learn faster.

The EBPV can start leaking oil. The hope is that if it is not in use, it won't start leaking. FWIW, I haven't noticed a difference in warm-up times.
