2002 7.3 l white smoke
My truck is a 2002 7.3 l with 76000 miles only mod Eng wise is 4 in Turbo back. OK here's the problem, white smoke I start the truck its about 40-45 degrees outside. She idles fine no smoke. I wait till she warms up a bit 7 or 8 min then take off get up the road and it starts smoking bad and what seemed like a lack of power. I stop no smoke at idle, but under acceleration when cold. Then it stopped smoking and it felt like I got power back. I shut her down for a lil over an hour, then fired her back up and no smoke anymore and good power.
What would cause this? Could the ebpv valve be the culprit. I checked the bypass its fine Turbo works fine no oil or fuel leaks no antifreeze loss, the exhaust has no abnormal smells. I'm stumped any suggestions? Thanks

Re: 2002 7.3 l white smoke
How many miles are on the truck?
White smoke (at startup) can be caused by low compression (worn piston rings/cylinder walls)...worn out fuel injectors (causing the injectors to fire "late", especially with cold, thick oil), or a problem with the glow plugs or glow plug relay. It also could be a sticky EBPV...but you would also hear a distinct 'muffled' noise from the exhaust... Also check your oil level...if you are low on oil, the oil can get aerated, which will also delay the injection event. If you were getting the white smoke when you lift off the accelerator pedal (after a moderately hard acceleration)...then the turbo (shaft seals/thrust bearing) could be the culprit. take care~ Dave |

Re: 2002 7.3 l white smoke
The truck has 76875 miles. There was no smoke at start up none till I started accelerating. A lil up the road. The oil level is fine no loss. There is no miss or knock. My violent resivor is on the min line when I checked this morning. When I fired her up this morn no smoke nothing abnormal, I heard the ebpv valve close and really open a few min later. Didnet notice if it was closed last night. Not shure what it could have been. Ill check tonight when the temps in the 40s again.

Re: 2002 7.3 l white smoke
as far as you know...has the truck always run just regular pump diesel fuel? no homebrew veggie junk?
and has this issue developed over some period of time and worsened? or did it start suddenly and stay about the same? since it doesn't smoke until you start accelerating, then I am leaning towards verrrrrry low fuel pressure, clogged air filter, or damaged injectors from bad fuel. |

Sounds like a jet engine. The ebpv operating.
