Trailer power

What do I need to do to put a 12v battery on my enclosed trailer? I am planning on installing some 115v lights inside powered by an inverter. I want to be able to charge the battery with the truck if possible. Would also like to power the break away switch as well.

Re: Trailer power

you need a 7 pin trailer plug system. it will have an aux wire you can use to charge the 12 v on your trailer. then just wire it all from your trailer battery accordingly.

Re: Trailer power

That's the ticket. It will only supply current to the trailer when the truck is running so will not drain the truck batt. Same setup as a 5th wheel or camp trailer.

Re: Trailer power

I have a 7 pin on the truck. I plan on running the hot wire from the truck to the + battery termnal and then ground the battery to the trailer frame. My concern is the power inverter. If I run it with the truck plugged to the trailer will I draw too many amps through the 7 pin connector? I don't remember how my dad's camper is set up.

Re: Trailer power

You need to put batteries in the trailer to run the inverter, the wire from the truck is to recharge the trailer batteries, make sure the wire from the truck has a diode in the circuit to prevent the trailer from being able to discharge the truck batteries..

Re: Trailer power

Why are you using 110v lights? Are you also going for 110v outlets? An inverter uses power to operate and along with lights will draw down a single battery fairly quick.

Re: Trailer power

I have 12volt lights inside, and 110V floresent, along with a series of outlets.
Inverter powers the 110 when I need them, but 12volt lighting covers 99% of my lighting needs. Trailer also has a shore line connection to allow 110 usage, and 12 volt charging also. also us a small 2000 watt gen set.
12v rear load light at the rear, and will be installing new FRC 900LED Scene lighting on the out side of the trailer 12v.
Soon as it warms up I am installing an A/V system also. This is a mobile show room that I run around with and is a constant work in progress.
7x14 haulmark Kodiak.

Trailer will be wired for shore power. I just want the inverter to run lights while off shore power.
