Chip vs. programmer. Whats the difference?

New to diesels and looking to do some modificatrions in the future. Can someone tell me the difference between a chip and a programmer? Why does it appear that the chip is a better option? Also, do you have to modify your transmission prior to putting a chip in?

So is a PHP the same as an edge just tuned to your truck's specs.

Bill offers custom tuning on one of the edge products, but its still a programmer.
