Front Hub/axle help

I am replacing my front hubs, and am not getting how the dust seal from the axle to the axle housing works. It doesnt seem to fit the axle housing and doesnt seem to fit like a typical seal on the axle itself.
The truck is a 2000 F350 4wd dually. the seal p/n is F81Z-1S175-HCA.
Did I get the wrong seal?

Thanks,

Re: Front Hub/axle help

It's not really a "seal" like you would normally think a seal should be. It's just kind of a barrier to help keep dust, mud, gunk, out of the axle tube. It presses on to the inner shaft and just kinda rides against the inner knuckle "C"
bracket where the axle goes in. The real axle grease seals are inside the differential housing. One on each side and have to be installed from inside.

Thanks,
IIRC If you're just replacing your hubs you should not have to replace any axle seals unless you pull the axle out of the knuckle. The only seals you should have to replace would be the yellow o-ring for the locking hubs.

To replace the axles seals you will need the axle half shafts out of the truck.

Are you also doing ball joints?

Re: Front Hub/axle help

It turned into one of those "while I'm here" projects. I am replacing ball joints, axle dust seals, unit hub assembly, shocks, 4wd vac hoses, rebuilding the auto lock assembly, and putting on new rotors & pads & changing brake fluid. Painting everything that comes off so it will look good.

The old dust seal on both sides were broke into 2 pieces and there wasnt enough left to tell how they installed.

Now I just need to make/buy the knuckle seal instal driver.

Thanks for the info
