Basically for the last couple of years I was able to buy B20 at the Shell 'signature' stations which are common in TX. Probably 8 of them in Austin alone.
For some time now I have not been able to purchase any Biodiesel. The websites that list biodiesel sources all appear to be out of date as well. It appears that the EPA had a hand in getting Bio removed from the stations due to a slight increase in one particular tailpipe pollutant but I don't know the details.
What to do?
My truck LOVED that stuff as it smoked less and sounded notably smoother on the B20.
Any info on sources and/ or updates on availability would be appreciated.
theres a place in DFW that has it, dont yall have the wille bio d at the truck stops?
yeah EPA has fooked this up alot.....they still cant figure out the nitrogen and co2 that there getting outta the bio d is just what the plants absorbed growing. i agree my trucks are much happier on a mix of biod.
DFW biod is supposed to be top quality there equipment is supposed to be fully automated, centrifuge the crap and water out....i wanna get another 1000gal tank and have them deliver it. we used to get it in stephenville one of the wholesalers always had it but didnt have enough people buying to keep it. cant convince some people at all.
Thanks for the info. I may have to run out to DFW BIO and check it out. The problem with the map (as Suns stated) is that it's out of date. The station in Keller doesn't carry it anymore, and I don't think they have for over 6 months.
The truck stop at 170/35W used to sale b20 and they still have the stickers out. I spoke with the fuel delivery guy last month and he said that he hasn't delivered any bio or bio blends all year. I dunno..
Is this the guy that was distributing the stuff out of his boat storage facility? Nice guy, good product, and a great price for B99 if so (like $.90 LESS than #2).
Unfortunately he is closed on weekends which is the only time that me and the truck pass thru that area and even then that is a rare occurence.
The Bio-Willie place up on I-35 outside Waco (Hillsboro I think) is no longer selling Bio either.
The number of responses to this thread in such a short time make it clear that I'm not the only one that misses this product being available.
i know my truck smoked a whole lot less on it. the nitrogen oxide goes up just a little with bio based fuel thats why they are crapping all over it. loosers.
Yup, Suns, you are right. The EPA screwed up biodiesel in Texas and parts of California. They are obsessed with tropspheric ozone. They act like it is VX gas.
Here in Indiana, the problem isn't the EPA, its the weather. Biodiesel clouds at 35 degrees. Much of the winter and spring are too cold to use it here.
B2 (a joke IMO) is fairly common in Indiana. There area couple stations where you can get B5 and B10, and a few more that offer B20. There is a place near Muncie that will sell you B100, but it ain't cheap.
Myself, I only run a little B100 in the summer to clean out my fuel system. The stuff is better solvent than Stoddard Solvent. I keep at least four fuel filters as the B100 dissolves the gunk in great globs.
B100 has only 125,000 BTU/gal, so it screws up my MPG. Once the system is A-OK, I stick to dino-diesel. Roll yer own.
The main reason you can't find it is because the price of #2 is too low for the biodiesel makers to make a profit. Back when #2 was crowding $5.00 per gal they were doing good. Feedstock oil to make biodiesel is scarce and expensive because of increased demand, plus, biodiesel makers in US are shipping it to Europe were its use is mandated by law, because they can make a profit over there. This is the reason you see other sources of feedstock like algea oil, chicken beef and pork fat being developed. This doesn't help you find any, but it helps you understand why. Follow the money.
In Dallas there is a place called The Green Spot at the corner of Buckner and Northcliff. They sell B100 from a 1000g tank on the side of the building and have either B5 or B20 (can't recall right now) at the regular pumps. I go down and fill w/ B100 when I can. Runs smooth and quiet. I don't really notice a difference in mileage.
I was told by an employee that the owner was looking into building his own processing plant in the Dallas area. They are the only game left in the Dallas area that I can find. What ever happened to BioWillie and his planned processing facility?
I always call to be sure they currently have the B100. They frequently run out being the only game in town. They recently upsized from a 500 to 100 gallon tank.
This is where I get my biodiesel. It's not in the best neighbor hood but it is very convenient. You just roll it, fill up, pay the man, and leave. Normal pump and they even sell filters there...on the cheap.
The only current location in Austin to buy Biodiesel is from a little hippy store called "EcoWise" at South Congress and Elizabeth street. It's not terribly convient (no pay at the pump) but they are nice people and they use the honor system for payment. The quality is quite good imo. It is 100% Biodiesel and just adding 15-30% reduces my tailpipe smoke to basically nothing.
Someone else is in the process of opening up a more commercial location on E. Cesar Chavez right next to the Montopolis bridge. Supposed to be open 'any day' for a couple of weeks now. PM me and I will give you the guys phone # so you can call for info, address, and to let him know you are interested. (I don't want to post the guy's cell #) We have discussed a Co-op w/ this guy where a group of us would just have a key to the pump, pay a fee, and basically buy the fuel closer to cost. So more people calling and expressing interest is a good thing.
Well, I'm kind of shocked. I started using Mapquest to search for Biodiesel instead of biodiesel.org (which I have found terribly inaccurate) and I began to call these companies and it turns out there are 15 sources or more here in Austin that sell the stuff.
