Well as some of you know the last pull of the season I broke the output shaft of my transmission. That has been a known weak point for the ZF6 transmission and a handful of guys around the country have broke them this season. Well apparently I have broken more than just the output shaft....
Output shaft Broken with the guts out of the tranny case:
Output shaft "stuck" in tcase:
Broken mid plate!
Another view:
Metal Shavings!
Now the interesting thing is that I have another ZF6 sitting here with a cracked tailshaft case that I was going to steal parts out of.... but I am finding out that there are some differences between the two transmissions. Specifically in the mid plate area where I cracked open on the pulling truck. Here is a pic of the midplate from the second transmission with a broken piece from the first transmission. Notice the difference in thickness of the parts:
Now the intersting thing to note that the mid plate has the same casting numbers on each one of them, but the lip is twice as thick on the second transmission. The two transmission have two different part numbers that I need to confirm are really different. Tranny number one is a "Hi-Torque" model, while I believe tranny number two is a "standard" model.
Edit: I just noticed that the difference in thickness in the picture is not as readily apparent as it is in person.
GRRRRR..... this might keep the Red truck home next weekend.
The second transmission is the original out of the pulling truck. Long story made short: I cracked the back half of the case when I lost a u-joint at 70mph..... the first transmission is the reman unit I picked up. I just got off the phone with Marc (Uncool) and he believes the original trans was made after a design change that was intended to beef up the midplate. My reman trans was manufactured before that design change.
I'm going down to BDP's dyno event. I'm still going with or without this truck. But I think I can get away with just dropping the guts out of tranny #2 into tranny #1 case.....
Good luck to you man. Hopefully the dyno has software to read over 1200, you'll surely need it. Im anxious to see what she does, good luck getting it back together!
Poking around google, looks like these people may have billet shafts for the zf6. Doesnt appear to be on their site, but the duramax folk are saying you can get a zf6 with some billet parts. So they may sell you them individually if you want to do the work yourself. Heres the linky http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2945628
Re-reading it says billet input, but I imagine if they are making inputs, there considering outputs.
EDIT heres the link to the manufacturer ointlaugh:
Yep, I talk with Mark at Danville on a semi-regular basis. The part that everyone seams to be breaking is the output shaft and no one has manufactured a billet replacement for it yet. Everyone is shocked at that $1700+ price tag. Now they are doing some heat treat to the new shafts they are installing, but that is still in the testing phases right now. I plan on getting a heat treated output and get it into the tranny in the future.
ALSO: Good News! My junk just fell together tonight! I would have never guessed it would have went together that easy tonight as hard of a time as I was having with it yesterday. I need to hook up the exhaust, batteries, tie up some loose ends and swap tires then its TEST DRIVE TIME!

Tranny in and works! The synchros are shot, it shifts like ####, but it does work. No video though. Truck runs good though! It did develop a miss at the end of the run, but I think something got wet, its raining and I was all over the road. But things for the most part look good!
Had a real fun "test ride"!!!! :bowfast: Not going to give anything away but that thing is quick!!! And yes that trans must have came without synchronizers!!:ford:
Take it freakin easy. We have seen the vids now we want the hp number. I hear the dyno at beans can bring a truck to its knees so like see what the ole girls got.
Eh HP numbers are just that. Numbers. The track is where it counts! I am curious as to what it will lay down, but I probably won't get too excited or dissapointed unless I'm under 500hp or over 650hp.
I should also take the time to mention now - I have a fire ring sealing issue - Its been like this basically since my run at Schieds. I have plans to take corrective action, but it involves some engine machine work. Everytime I change the fire rings I get 1 good hook and then they leak, no matter how many times I torque them, hot, cold, doesn't matter. I've come to the conclusion that the high temps I see cause them to expand more than the cast iron and then the crush themselves more. Once they cool down, they no longer seal. Just something I want everyone to be aware of now. I don't want any rumors about a split block, or throwing a rod on the dyno, or blowing it up, :blah::blah::blah::blah: i know it has an issue, and now all of you do to. It will be fine.
I'm sure we will be talking....... but I have a gameplan already It involves some port blockages and nitrogen filled inconel fire rings. We'll have a chat when I come pick up Luke's stuff.
