Newbie Questions

OK guys here's the deal, I bought a 2002 with 218k. I am new to the powerstroke engine. Truck smokes white when you first start it, this clears up to a light bluish gray when warm, also if I let it shift into overdrive and rpm's go to 1200-1400 it has a definite miss, but if I put my foot back into it a little bit it goes away. Brought it in to the shop, they are telling me that it has one bad injector, and that another hole is "dead". It idles and seems to run down the road fine. My question is if it does have a "Dead" hole, wouldn't that cause it to miss all the time? It just seems fishy to me and I am thinking about getting a second opinion. Any and all opinions/ advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Newbie Questions

Did they give you the actual compression numbers from each cylinder? What exactly do they mean by a "dead" hole? Are they saying that there is no compression or that the injector isn't firing?

Re: Newbie Questions

No numbers, mechanic said he could "hear" it, said "motor actually sped up when hitting compression on that cylinder" when cranking over

Re: Newbie Questions

Do yourself a favor, and never go back to that ”mechanic”

That mechanic is full of it. Sounds like he is just trying to take you to the cleaners. Find a quality mechanic and get the actual numbers and go from there.

Re: Newbie Questions

Honestly I would get my hands dirty if I were you. The best way to learn is that way. Make ya a compression gauge or buy one and check yourself. I've got a pretty good assumption your going to need injectors. .02

Re: Newbie Questions

Thanks for the advice guys. I got a buddy who owns a "fleet" of powerstrokes. I am gonna take it to his mechanic even though it is a bit of a drive, but he is the most reputable mechanic I have heard of in my area. ColeTrain45 does make a good point about getting my hands dirty, I just don't have the time right now so to the shop it goes.
