Will Van Trans Work.

I posted this in the trans section but haven't gotten any replies. My cousin has a '97 Super Duty. The trans is about done for. We bought a PSD van together for parts. It's a '94 and was t-boned in an accident. It has 145,xxx miles on it. We drove it home (about 50 miles or so ) and it runs and shifts great. Does anyone know if the trans will swap? We haven't gotten under it yet and done any measuring or anything ourselves. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

It will work if it has the speed sensor in the rear diff. Some vans had them in the tail housing

Thanks. I'll have to check it out. His plan if they're the same is to have the van trans freshened up and swap them.

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

If the truck is a superduty(f-450) that would mean that the e-brake is on the tailshaft of the transmission. If the van transmission is the same then you are good to go. The superduty transmission is really nothing more than the 4x4 transmission with the e-brake assembly in place of the adapter for a transfer case. If the van is earlier than a 99 then it will be the e40d which would be the correct model type with the vss in the rear differential versus the 4r100 with the additional speed sensor in the transmission.

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

the 99-03 4r100 vans use a speedo gear in the tail housing of the trans. Pretty sure the eariler e40d vans do as well.

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

Okay. Can the tail section off the truck be installed on the van transmission, eliminating the speedo gear? Or is it more trouble than it's worth?

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

No in short you can not just put the 2wd tail housing on a superduty(4wd) transmission. The output shaft is shorter on the 4wd/superduty transmission. If there is a speedo gear on the transmission then it will still work if your truck has the vss in the rear differential. You simply do not connect a cable to it. Just leave the speedo gear in its place and forget about it. If the van transmission doesn't have the e-brake assembly on the tail of the transmission then it will not work without several expensive modifications as well as disabling the e-brake on the truck.

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

Thank you, that info is very helpful. As soon as we can get a break from work we're going to crawl under them and look. Both of us have cab and chassis trucks with dump beds and are running the Hell out of them right now. Work season should be over in a month or so.

Re: Will Van Trans Work.

The pre-99 vans only have a vss in the rear differential. They have an E4OD transmission. The 99-up vans have the 4R100 transmission which has the extra sensor.
