I would check your IDM. I worked on a 99 not long ago that had the same problem and turned out the idm was bad. Replaced it and the problem was cured

I personally wouldnt think it would be glow plugs cause if you had a problem there then it would have problems starting and you would for sure notice that. IDM would be my best suggestion i got

Does it only smoke when you first start it or is it smoking even after it warms up?

Smokes on start up and the smoking dies down a little bit after warm up

Re: 7.3 smoking problem...Any Ideas???

Might be more than one problem, but your glow plug relay could be going bad. Id test it first to see if thats causing the long start period and if its working then I would check the glow plug/injector harness under the valve cover. They are known for burning up, had that happen to my 97 but if its good also then its probably a safe bet it needs glow plugs. As for the smoke after warm up that could be the IDM causing that problem

Re: 7.3 smoking problem...Any Ideas???

I changed both valve cover gaskets and both injector harnesses when I changed the injectors and I've changed both glow plug relays....I was told the glow plugs were changed prior to me buying the truck....I've also read that maybe a glow plugs is broken and that can cause it to smoke....
