2008 6.4 Drain water fuel separator problem

I bought the truck a couple months ago with 100,000 on it, and its around 107,000 now. 2 days ago drain fuel water separator popped up on my dash so I looked up how to drain it (frame rail upunder driver door) and tried doing so. When I opened the valve fuel barely dripped out so I left it open for about 5 mins and it never started flowing. Dash still displayed message so I tried it again later with the key turned forward. (to pressure the fuel line). Still no flow just a slight drip and the sign stayed on. Tried it again tonight and after i opened the valve I turned the key on and off multiple times to purge the pump, finally she started flowing instead of dripping and i let it flow for about 30 seconds then closed the valve on the separator. Fuel that drained out looked clean. Got back on the road and the display comes back on. Ive ran 2 separate tanks of fuel since this problem started and the fuel filters were changed 11/11. Also when I was coming up the interstate after the last drain it ran fine except for one time I got on it and it acted like it didnt want to accelerate. Anybody have a clue whats going on here?

Thanks!

You may have to pull it apart and clean it up inside. If it hasn't been drained in a long time there could be a build up inside. Do you know when the last time was the fuel filters were changed?

Almost a year ago as in 11/11?!!
Unless you never drive the thing you are sorely overdue for filters...

The 6.4 is a maintenance whore.

It'll bite you in the ass if you don't get on the ball with maintenance, and believe me, the truck doesn't care if you're a noob or not.

Get the separator squared away ASAP, and get the filters changed.

After that, drain the separator at least once a month, and change the fuel filters out every 10-15K (depending on your fuel source).

Getting water in the HPFP will grenade it, and you will be looking at thousands of dollars in repairs.

How would you go about taking the water separator apart and clean it?
