Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

See signature for truck and mods. Ok I've been going throught the No Start Sticky. Truck will intermittenly not start. I have a Scan Guage II and have been monitoring the ICP voltage, IPR duty cycle, and ICP pressure.

KOEO-
ICP pres- 0
ICP volt- 0.23
IPR duty- 14.4%
FICM MP- 48
No trouble codes

While cranking with ICP connected-
ICP pres- 327
ICP volt- 0.56-0.59
IPR duty- 59%
FICM MP- 48
No trouble codes

While cranking with ICP disconnected-
ICP pres- 1250
ICP volt- 0.0
IPR duty- 59%
FICM MP- 48
No trouble codes

Truck will not start with the ICP disconnected but it did start one time when I plugged it back in and the ICP pres jumped from 327 back up above 600. Now it won't come back above 327 when plugged back in.

The oil filter housing is filling up with oil when filter is removed and engine is cranking. BUT the gauge is not registering any pressure during long crank/no start. There is no metal on the filter so I'm thinking that the LPOP is okay.

So, I am completely full of oil and am using a Racor filter from International(same as Motorcraft) and Motorcraft 15w40. Oil was changed about 2,000 miles ago. Filter housing is filling but pressure not registering on guage during long crank. ICP pres is 327 but will jump to 1250 if ICP is unplugged. That leads me to believe that the HPOP is working fine or else it wouldn't jump up to 1250 psi. I would believe that the LPOP is fine or the HPOP wouldn't have enough oil to generate 1250 PSI. I haven't checked the IPR yet but I would think that it's fine from the duty cycle readings that I'm getting.

I'm leaning toward bad ICP or LPOP oil regulator. What do you guys think?

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

i believe during cranking the IPR should go to 85% which is wide open...in your case it is only going to 59% open. if the ICP is the problem you can usually unplug it and the truck will fire up. also with the ICP unplugged you shouldnt show any ICP because the sensor isnt plugged in to give the pcm a reading...so the 1250 that you are seeing isnt accurate. im leaning towards the STC fitting next to the HPOP or an IPR valve. but before you dive into that you could replace the ICP and pull the LPOP regulator since both are easy to access. best of luck

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

His 04 does not have the troublesome STC fitting.

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

Ok thanks for the replies. I am in the process of moving things out of the way to get to the IPR. I've been searching here but I can't figure out if the wrench/socket I need is 1 1/8th or 1 3/16th to remove it. Anyone know for sure? I'm getting conflicting stories by searching the forum. I'm going to buy a wrench tomorrow and cut it down to get the IPR out and check it to see if the screen is broken. Should I be looking for anything else when I get it out?

Would the IPR not reaching 85% duty cycle cause the dash guage to read no pressure during a long crank/no start?

The only other thing that I noticed yesterday after I got it started was the the voltage for the ICP would fluctuate. Normal operating range is 0.80 ~ 0.85 volts at hot idle. Mine would sit at 0.81 ~ 0.83 volts but would randomly drop to 0.69 ~ 0.72 volts for a second and then jump back up to normal range. The engine RPMs did NOT fluctuate at all when this happened. The ICP pressure would also stay constant around 580 during the drop in voltage. The IPR duty cycle as stayed constant at 24.4% during the voltage drops. This is what originally lead me to believe that the ICP is the problem.

Any other ideas out there?

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

Is your ICP on the valve cover or under the turbo?

Ok so I got the IPR out tonight but I still managed to break the part where the plug inserts . So I need a new one anyway. The screen is still intact but starting to let lose on one side. The "stuff" on the screen is what I'm trying to figure out. It's a brownish/greenish color. It looks just like the hard shells of popcorn seeds only soaked in oil and pliable. There is NO metalic pieces or particles that I can see.

So what is it and where did this "stuff" come from??
Am I correct to assume that the HPOP is ok because there is no metal on the screen??
If my only problem is this, would this cause the ICP to not get above 327psi??
Would this cause the oil gauge on the dash to not move during long crank/no start??

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

Well at least International has an IPR for me!! Best price here in MT is $235.00 through International.

Anybody got any ideas on the post above??

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

Anyone ever use an IPR from International in an 03-04 6.0????

The International part #1846057C1

According to the parts guy at the International store, this the only IPR that International used on the VT365. He said this is verified by the C1 at the end of the part #. There is also no split in production dates to show that a different part number was used on early engine serial numbered VT365s. This is the only one.

Will it work on my 04??? Or did Ford do something different??

Re: Oil Pressure Problems-thinking ICP

OK I went a head and tried the International IPR last night. Truck fired up right away. Fired up good a couple of times last night. This morning it was around 50 degrees and it fired right up again.

So I've read in a few different places that you can not use the IPR with the edge guard on a 03-04. Well I'll be a test dummy and report on how it works. I did quite a bit of comparison last night before I put it in though. I could only find two differences. The overall length and the clock position on the plug. The length increased only the by the width of the little 3 fingered protector on the screen (so about 1/32 of an inch). The 12 different holes all remained the same in relation to the the actual nut. The solinoid however did change 1 hr of clock position (from 3 to 4 if standing and looking at the IPR from the drivers side fender).

If it does work, it's deffinately the best deal that I got in town. International sold it to me for $200 instead of the original $235 they quoted me. Everybody else wanted $265 to $340 .
