Fuel Pump Plug Options
I'm going to electronic fuel and looking to plug the hole of the MIA fuel pump. For some reason I'm not big on the freeze plug, has anyone else used a plug that is semi-removable?
I was thinking something like this:

Re: Fuel Pump Plug Options
What is wrong with the 7/8" freeze plug? There shouldn't be any pressure in the crank case that would cause it to come out.
I haven't had any issues with the freeze plug. I put some Permatex around it when I installed it as a gasket.

Re: Fuel Pump Plug Options
that plug is meant for water, oil will most likely rot it over time.....use the freeze plug, it's a better deal than you think to begin with...I wasn't hep on it either, but it's worked out fine ......
one trick tho, before you install it, put it cup-side down on a heavy piece of steel and set a ball-peen hammer on it (flat side down) and TAP it with a second hammer until you flatten it slightly, as it needs to be TIGHT in the hole..... I checked the before and after outside dimension with a digital caliper, until i had expanded it a bit.... put a SMALL amount of Permatex Aviation Sealant (yep, the brown goo) on it and drive it in.... I also cleaned the surface after I installed it with BrakeKleen and sealed the outside with 1200 degree silicone sealant..... no leaks yet.

Re: Fuel Pump Plug Options
Thank you guys, noted and I'll probably be going with the freeze plug.
Just wanted to leave my options open, such as being able to go back to a mechanical pump as a backup option, selling the truck, etc. Maybe taking out a freeze plug wouldn't be as bad as I'm thinking. |

Re: Fuel Pump Plug Options
I went around the inside of the 7/8" plug and put a bunch of dimples in it to make it super tight.

Re: Fuel Pump Plug Options
You can remove the freeze plug. Just punch an hole in one edge (with a sharp punch) and run a lag screw in , then pull it out with vice grips.

Re: Fuel Pump Plug Options
When I finally converted to an electric fuel pump I was going to use a freeze plug like everyone else. But then I got all paranoid about the thing falling into the engine or having it leak after everything was all said and done.
So I made my own plug on a lathe in the same shape as the fuel pump that used to plug the hole. ![]() ![]() ![]() Put 2 o-rings on it... ![]() And then mounted it under the plate that holds the fuel line splitter... ![]() So far so good...
