When do i need gauges?

Ive got a 96 F350 PSD. currently theres a K&N filter (not intake, filter only) and a Hypertech flash tuner in/on the truck. Granted, I plan on running a Tymar, or similar intake and a TS Performance chip. These were there when i bought the truck, as well as the Mag-Hytec (i believe is the name) trans pan. I plan on doing the intake pretty soon. Then an exhaust (Diamond Eye 5", aftermarket downpipe, 6" tip, no cat no muffler) Then doing the chip. At what point should i add Boost, Trans temp, and EGT gauges? I should probably get them off the bat, but i was curious when it was actually needed.

Order of mods:

1: Intake
2: Exhaust
3: TS Chip
4: (while later) Injectors

My guess is gauges are a must once i have a chip. recommended after intake and exhaust?

Sorry if this has been covered before, ive searched and didnt find much. Sorry if this is a n00b question... This is the first diesel ive had that ive modified.

With any mods should be gauges. With stocker truck also, its always good to keep a close eye on your enging to prevent damage. Better safe than sorry!

Re: When do i need gauges?

I would install gauges first before any kind of other mod, but definitely before you put the TS Chip on your truck. Gauges were the first thing I bought and installed on my truck. You want keep track of those EGT’s

Re: When do i need gauges?

Thats what i had figured. I am unsure of which gauges to get. I will be doing some towing, so i assume trans temp is important? especially since i have an automatic?
Ill look into gauges first. there are some from Summit, the one boost gauge is $200... is there something special about it? heres the link:

Auto Meter 7359 - Auto Meter NV Series Analog Gauges - Overview - SummitRacing.com

I was looking at these gauges, but with a black face... Im rather new to diesel modding, like i stated above.

Also, am i on the right track with my mods? not going the wrong direction?

Re: When do i need gauges?

Auto Meter is a good gauge. You don’t need one that read's Vacuum either. I would talk to some of the vendors on here and they can get you pointed in the right direction. You will get a better price on all the gauges and pillar as a package deal from the vendors. Then you can get to doing some of the other mods you want to do.

Re: When do i need gauges?

You want to get just a boost gauge and not a vacuum/boost gauge cause diesels don't create vacuum. That's why they have a vacuum pump on them.

Re: When do i need gauges?

Ill have to check with vendors, as well as work. I get a discount on everything at Summit. Thats why i chose there. Thoroughbred Diesel has the full gauge pillar kit for just under $500 i believe..

Re: When do i need gauges?

You are a SUM-G? Save the discount for the big ticket items unless Summit has lifted the 'amount you can buy thing in a year' thing.

Make a post in an area applicable to what you are in the market for and in the title say something along the lines of -Vendors, looking for gauge prices-

Usually vendors will PM you the info.

Its still like that, sadly. I was working on my Jeep so unfortunately i dont have much left. I can only spend $1000 a year since im part time, going to school. I may bump up to Full time though.

Not sure what you meant by SUM-G? lol

Ill Post something similar to that, if im looking for gauges, would General Aftermarket be the place for it? (Sorry, new here lol)
