Exclamation Won't start after rebuild. Need help

I just got done rebuilding my 7.3. She's back in the truck and all buttoned up. I did fill the fuel bowl and hpop reservoir. I gave it about 6 10-15 sec cranks and it gave a couple good tries but won't start. Am I not cranking enough? Long enough? Or is there air in fuel system? Any help or suggestions would be great.

Checking for air in the fuel system would be a good start, pop the cap and see if its air locked.

You have base oil pressure reading on your gauge? It'll take a while to bleed everything out.

Keep filling the hpop. Put some chargers on the bats. It will take a while to get oil to the injectors.

Yup. I had to refill the hpop 2 times. Keep cranking and watch the hpop oil level.

How much oil should it take to fill her up after being bone dry. I put in about 3 1/2 gallons initially then started to crank the motor over, added another gallon and it's not even on the stick??

Re: Won't start after rebuild. Need help

Did you fill the HPOP initially? I did and ended up adding another qt. after cranking a while and checking it. The hpop fills the rails and then and only then can that oil fire the injectors.

After I did mine, I decided if I did this again, I would fill the rails and the HPOP to help speed up the process.

If you did not fill the hpop, then the lpop is filling the hpop and then the rails so it may take a lot of time.

I initially did not fill the hpop. After a few tries of cranking I did. It took on very little on very little oil. I double checked and everything looks to be hooked up right. All grounds are on.

Also thought I'd add that you are going to be in the 18qt range to fill a completely dry engine. 3 1/2 gallons isn't going to be enough, 4 1/2 would be a good start IMO.

Re: Won't start after rebuild. Need help

I have to pick up another gallon of oil and I'll get it topped off and do some more cranking.
