need advice after head studs
i just finished doing a head stud job on a truck and went on a test drive. i noticed that the coolant temp will rise to about 200-208 and stay in that range for awhile. it will ocationally go to 210 or 212 but will cool to 208 somewhat quickly. but at idle it wont go below 202. no puking or anything like that but it seems like the thermostat isnt opening all the way. granted it was 101 outside when i was doing this but at idle it should drop fairly quickly and its not. the guy is coming to get the truck sat morning and headed straight to get a horse trailer. does this sound like a thermostat issue or did i possibly do something wrong? every now and then i can get the temp at idle to drop 190 but maybe one out of 7-8 idles after a run. other than that it runs like a champ!

Re: need advice after head studs
If its that hot outside it might stay in that range.....at 75-80* my truck idles at 195*.....197* if I am in drive at a long light.
At 90* while towing my truck never goes over 207* that seems to be where the fan kicks in everytime....then it drops under 200 again. |

I think I have read that the t-stat does not fully open till like 215-220*
Pretty sure all t-stats are the failsafe kind that go wide open when trashed. |

Re: need advice after head studs
thermostat helped at idle but its not moving coolant as fast as it should. i think the front cover is cavitated. not bad but enough that when it is hot outside it wont move the coolant enough to get it to cool down quick. and no i dont hear the fan which is kinda odd but it seems to be doing ok.

I never thought about that......I would have a look at the pump also I think those crappy impellers like to slip on the pump shaft.

I don't think it's caveating, I personally have never seen it on a 6.0. I'd be willing to bet your missing some blades on the impeller though, their just made of stupid plastic. Or like already stated, spinning on the shaft do to a crack. There is a billet water pump you can buy.
