2290 code

My 2003 F250 with 197000 miles has started to do a wierd crank and then die every morning. Only first cranking of the day then all is well. Well this past weekend a was pushing it pretty hard and seemed fine but when a checked for codes on the edge it showed a 2290 (low icp). Should I be expecting a major failure soon?

Re: 2290 code

P2290 ICP Injector control pressure too low Actual pressure is less than commanded for a specified time
What is your ICP running should be around 580 at idle hot, cold 1100-1200 and about 3800 at WOT. So if your pressure is lower or drops below 500 you are in trouble.

Re: 2290 code

Could be lots of things. Check your ICP signal key on engine off to check for a biased sensor, Should be 0.8 volts (someone correct me if i'm wrong). Check the ICP sensor wiring for chafing (not as common on early 6.0 but a pita). Are you running aftermarket oil filter? If so they don't close the drain valve properly and cause oil to leakdown while it sits. If not these things, could be sign of high pressure oil leak, hpop on its way out, lpop problems. Gonna be some diag required.

Re: 2290 code

I did notice this morning for the first start of the day that it fired right up as usaul then died. This time I was watching and the in dash oil pressure gauge never rose. On second start, it fired and ran and gauge rose. Maybe major problems on the horizon.

Re: 2290 code

Sounds like Low oil pressure pump starving the hpop. However on the early 6.0, on the driver side of the HPOP there is a little ball bearing that likes to come out of its happy place and causes low base oil pressure. Usually this causes a no start though. If you have a mechanical oil pressure guage, check base oil pressure. The guage on the dash won't tell you much, pretty well shows oil pressure if you have more than 7psi i think.

Re: 2290 code

Funny thing is it will always fire right up, run for a second or two and die. Fire it right back up and sometimes the same scenerio, but by the third time it runs and cranks rest of day even multiple starts during the heat (90 degrees) out and ECT and EOT's over 200 degrees.

Where can I hook up a mechanical gauge? Fitting sizes?

Some guys like mech- gauges I have them on my 97 lot of work to install and to read everything that is important you will need about 8 or 9 gauges. If you get something like the Edge CTS it is plug and play up and running in 2 minutes and able to read 8 things at one time or ScangaugeII plug and play just harder to setup and reads less at one time plus they will read codes. I had one of the first Edge Insights but had to have the new CTS what a sweet setup.

Re: 2290 code

Even with the best scanner or tuner out there you will not get a reading because they don't use a pressure transducer for the low pressure. Dbore, find your self a regular oil pressure gauge that reads to 100 psi. On top of the engine on the oil cooler housing base, there are a couple sensors. The single wire is the one you want (single wire hense why its a grounding switch shows pressure, not a reading!) With the engine off of course, unscrew it. I believe the thread is 1/8 pipe thread but I can't remember honestly. It is a common size so if you get and oil pressure guage set, it will have what you need. At operating temp minimums are 12 psi at 750 rpm, 24 psi at 1200 rpm and 45psi at 1800. You will probably find your truck is fine. If it is, you probably have a problem with the high pressure oil system.
