Im just curious if there is a noticeable difference when towing with the 4.10 vs the 3.73?
My truck already has the 4.10. i have a 96 f350 with the 3.73, but that isnt a good enough comparison, since the power is so much different. I know the mpg will jump if i change to the 3.73, but will it hinder my towing capabilities by that much??
you WILL notice a towing change, yes lots of people tow with 3.73's but if mpg is not a huge concern and pulling is your number one concern,----stay with the 4:10's.
I went from 4:88's to 4:30's in the F550 and it was a BIG difference in off the line driving and driving at lower speeds in general.
It really helped me on long hauls at 70+mph due to the rpm's being up there already.
All Im saying is if you really like the way it tows now you will not like the way it tows with 3:73's especially if your at speeds around the 50-62mph area.

OBS Powerstroke f-250 and f-350 had 3.55 and 4.10 from the factory only.
Aftermarket there are other options of course, and a bill can be written incorrectly.
For heavy towing you need 4.10s. Overdrive with 3.73s is virtually useless with a heavy load at speeds of less than 65 mph. You will actually see better mpg towing with the 4.10 up to 60-65 mph.
I like my 4.10's up until about 70 then the RPMs are a little high. But since I have to follow the trucks speed limit of 55 in some states and 60-65 in most others I've decided to stick to the 4.10's
Depends on what you tow. My 95 cc lb srw 4x4 had the 3.55 and just a chip and towed whatever I wanted just fine. MPG was right around 21 empty and 15-17 towing a decent load. I think 3.73 is the ideal gear for one unless your gonna tow above 10,000 to 12,000 pounds regular. If its too much , just turn off the overdrive! Thought about regearing my dually to 3.73.

If your getting that mileage I want to know what you've got!
That's pretty good, seems a little high but once in awhile I get pretty good mileage towing also.
i have to agree with smoris here. since hte dp-tuner and driving smarter. i have gotten 20+ since the chip. highest being 22.89. no bullsh!t. but i drive mostly highway and country roads. not a whole lot of stop and go.
Ya well, i get no more than 13 mpg with my 4.10s unloaded and that is only because i just got my rear tires back to stock size from the 265 75s that were on it. Before that it was 11 to 12.
I think im going to keep the 4.10s because i need it to tow the hay trailer, tractors, horse trailers etc. Sounds like ill be happier with them, despite mpg
I towed a 32' enclosed gooser that scaled at 14k through the Smoky's back in June. Kept the cruise set at 71 mph (GPS) and had Jody's majic box set at 60 tow and the trans would only downshift out of overdrive on the hardcore hills, most of time the boost would come up and just pull. But if I slowed down to 60 mph, it would downshift a lot. Whatever gear ratio you have, these 7.3's love the 2000- 2100 rpm range for towing. Keep in mind I have 35's on a 4" lift with 3.73's and the motor is not stock.
Note: I also got 11 mpg calculated by hand which I didn't think was too bad.
