38r, retune or not?

Hey there Jody and Diane, I hope you guys are doing well.
I have a tuning question for youo I need a reburn for the 38r?
My original tunes were for a stock turbo set up. I put in the 38r and have not been as happy with it as I had hoped. It spools fairly fast, but does some crazy stuff when I open it up from a light or boost start. It seems to either defuel or waste gate opens?? I'm not sure which it is or if it may be a tune issue. I have unplugged the red line for the waste gate and not much difference. Do I need a boost fooler? I have also seen higher than normal egt's when running hard and towing the trailer. I found a leak at the up pipes, which I know will affect egts a bit, but I would like some expert advice and not from the forum this time on what to do.

Thanks,

Re: 38r, retune or not?

I'll be in the same boat (complete with slight uppipe leak dammit) shortly after I install my 38R. From what I've read just installing the turbocharger alone will not net a HUGE increase of power, moreso giving you the room for larger injectors. A lot of reply's I've read on this issue state that boost pressure actually drops after this turbo is installed while only a slight power gain is seen.

I think I'll wait to retune after I order some hybrid injectors though, no sense doing a whole ton of chip shipping.

Oh and make sure your wastegate is tight, meaning the threaded rod is good and tight so your wastegate isn't opening prematurely.

Re: 38r, retune or not?

Thanks Dave. Luckily I have a f-6 chip, so I'm hoping if I need updated tunes Jody can do it through the email and/or remote into the laptop in my truck. I'm doing the debate in my head to either pull the tranny to get to the up pipes or try to get them after pulling the turbo back out(AGAIN). I made an attempt at the gaskets when I did the turbo swap and FAILED miserably. The lack of patience, swivel heads that won't break, not enough extentions, and no PB blaster all played a big part of my failure. Now I bet I need new up pipes since I let this slide for so long..............UGH!!

Re: 38r, retune or not?

Yeah you have the easy update chip haha. I may just bite the bullet and order uppipes then install the turbo at the same time and solve any and all problems. Especially since not a single person has said that the uppipe/turbo install went easy, seems like a PITA and I'm not planning on pulling my tranny till she blows up!

Re: 38r, retune or not?

The turbo is not bad to do at all, but those damn up pipes kicked my arse on the first attempt.............really need to give it another go, but the PITA is still all too fresh and I'm dreading it

Boost leaks play havoc with the turbo. With DP tunes, you need a fooler.

Not if you have the no codes tunes. And I think all his new tunes are no codes tunes. so if you have new tunes you should not have codes AND if you have the older tunes you could have got the option of a no codes tune..

Not trying to say you are wrong...My tunes had the "no codes" and all that did was disable the CEL for ICP, and boost. Now those tunes are 2 years old. If it has changed, I apologize and did not mean to mislead the OP.

Well if it has a no codes tune that will not throw a code for boost like you just said.. Then there is no need for a boost fooler..

Maybe I am missing somthing..

Re: 38r, retune or not?

Yeah, my tunes are 2 or 3 years old now I think. I really wish someone from DP would chime in on this. I have heard from so many people that say a fooler is necessary. I was looking on the DP website and they actually sell a fooler, so that leads me to believe I DO need one. I thought I had no code tunes except for my tow tunes, but when I was towing the trailer I was using my 80hp econo and got an ICP code when I passed a slow poke. I guess I will have to just call Jody or Diane and I'll let you guys know what I find out. Maybe we are all missing something??
