front locking hub question

so i have been having this problem of when my hubs are unlocked and i cut my wheel hard it feels like my truck wants to go in a straight line. so i was on the beach today and i accidentally kept my hubs locked and i cut my wheel hard and the truck actually turned instead of hopping and wanting to go straight. so is it bad to keep my hubs locked and drive around??

thanks,
cam

Re: front locking hub question

yes that is what has be confused because shouldnt they be binding when the hubs are locked. and whats the worse thing that can happen from leaving them locked other than lowering my mpg maybe by .5 or 1

Re: front locking hub question

It turned with the hubs locked because you were on the beach. The tires aren't going to grab and hop on sand. Try it in a parking lot. It will hop and lurch.

They do this on pavement (even with the hubs unlocked) because of the Ackerman angle (or lack of actually). The stock steering is set up so that one tire wants to turn more than the other when you have it turned tight and they fight each other.

Re: front locking hub question

i have driven around with the hubs locked and on pavement and it does not hop or bind up it just turns normally. i also have the stock ifs dana 50 in it that is getting replaced could that be 50% of the issue because my friends 1st gen dodge doesnt bind up and that has a dana 60 so i think its the pos dana 50???

Re: front locking hub question

well without the transfer case locked it won't hop with the hubs locked

you will lose some mpg and the internals and seals will be being spun if you leave em locked ,, not a big deal ,, but honestly you need to figure out WTF is causing a hop when unlocked only
