PMR goes boom! I have questions! :)
Damn it!
Forgive me if you've seen this on other sites. Just posting it in a couple places for thoughts. Yesterday coming home from Seattle, just cruising along at 65 mph, my PMR's decided to take a peek into the outside world. Everyone told me it probably would happen, and it finally did. I'm pissed, but I can't blame anyone but myself. So, I'm at a delima. The truck is listed in the sig. It has 140k on the clock, lifted, tinted windows, alarm, lockers, stereo, dvd player, matching canopy..... all the goodies. Do I fix the motor with a wrecking yard motor and put all my engine goodies on it? Do I rebuild a core motor? Sell the truck as it sits? I just don't know. Don't really have the $$$ to build a new engine and don't want to really sell my baby. I love driving this thing and it's set up how I want it. So, does anyone have any suggestions? Anywhere in the Portland area that is a good diesel rebuilder? Anyone have a used running engine to sell or a good core motor? I heard people say rebuild it myself. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but never rebuilt a diesel. Don't want to spend the $$ to have it blow up in 5k miles. Thanks in advance for any advice. Ryan

Rebuild with filled rods...some guys have found pretty reasonable blocks.

Re: PMR goes boom! I have questions! :)
Drop a "new" (used) engine in it and transfer all your goodies.....except maybe change tuners.
Didn't happen to be a "80hp Economy" tune by chance?

... I was not going to go there...However one of the changes I would make, be it because of tuning or not... Would be to change to a TS based chip, with a tuner of your choice.

That's all I'm saying about tuning because I'm just asking for help. Not looking for tuner bashing. |

Re: PMR goes boom! I have questions! :)
I'm dropping a used 99 van motor in my 2000 with 150ish thousand on the clock, cleaning and painting it, putting my goodies on it and throwin it in.....if you are patient and search hard enough you can find em' for $1500 roughly complete drop in's then you have core hpop, injectors, turbo etc and extras, and a block to build in your spare time.
You'll pay $4,000+ to have someone build you a stock-to-mild motor the price only goes up with name's. I was looking at 5k for a stock motor and that was just heads down, doing studs and everything else myself.....a lot of money to throw away at once.

Re: PMR goes boom! I have questions! :)
Find a donor motor with forged rods.
If your mechanically inclined, get it rebuilt and put your goodies on it. I took my block and heads to a machine shop. He sleeved one cylinder and bored the rest to 20 over. Put it back together for $3100 including the $1100 rebuild kit from Ford and head work. A lot of the money is in the R and R of your motor.

I also concur that you should at least look for a good used forged rod motor as a first course of action. |
