Upgraded oil cooler difference
I was going to go with the a Bullet Proof external oil cooler, but got to reading where it may make the oil too cold. Who makes or sells an internal cooler that is an upgraded version from a stock unit? We just purchased this rig, and my wife loves it, so I need to make sure that it will live. The egr and oil cooler stuff will all get done this spring, so I am just getting it all in line early.

Re: Upgraded oil cooler difference
Get ahold of the guys at BP. If I remember right, they have a cold weather kit for the cooler.

Re: Upgraded oil cooler difference
Nothing wrong with a stock oil cooler. Do a coolant flush, right mixture, and a coolant filtration kit. I have a 1st gen 6.0 in 9 years never had an oil cooler go out.

Re: Upgraded oil cooler difference
Egr delete roughly 200 +/-, oil cooler 300 +/-, coolant filtration 120 +/-, plus intake gaskets oil n coolant, probably close to 1000 give or take a lil.

).The stock oil cooler is fine and is a great cooler for the size of space that it takes up. Air to oil coolers are good and I like mine A LOT and don't have any trouble keeping my oil above 200F even in the dead of winter with my system. I have a 215F thermostat in my system and it warms up just as fast as the stock system ever did and even in the 110F heat, my oil temps are still at 208-209F all the time. This is just my preference. I in no way think air to oil coolers are a must or anything but I am glad that I never have to worry about clogging an oil cooler either.

Re: Upgraded oil cooler difference
When your oil temp is at 208-209 what is your coolant temp at? Is that under load or just cruising?

Re: Upgraded oil cooler difference
My coolant temp was 200-206F. These temps are unloaded and cruising. Now when the OAT drops to below 80F, the coolant temp drops to 190-192F, but my oil temps stay in the 205-207F range. Keep in mind that these temps are like this because I have a thermostat installed to keep them elevated so I am in reality not using the full capacity of my cooler. Basically what happens is the oil heats up enough to cause the thermostat to open and send more oil to the cooler but as soon as it does, the temps drop off again and the thermostat closes to warm the oil back up and it just keeps doing this. If I were to tow a load with this, the max temps would be the same as if I didn't have a thermostat installed because I would just reach the max cooling capacity of the oil cooler. I have heard of other guys that have this system and have towed in excess of 18k in the 110+F heat of the desert and have only seen oil temps in the 230F range as opposed to the 250F range with the OEM cooler.
