Re: need advice after head studs

ive seen it happen on a 6.0 my brothers was bad! it was cavitated to the point that no coolant was moving. put a new front cover on and it was golden! but i never pulled the water pump on it and never looked at the front cover but judging by what was going on i think its either the water pump or front cover. the guy is hooking up to a trailer with it today so we will see how it goes.

Not sure if I'm following this correctly. You figured your brother's trucks cooling system was cavitated so you replaced the front cover but did not check the condition of the water pump impeller and you are waiting for him to pull a heavy load to confirm that you diagnosed his problem correctly.

So did you reuse the old water pump or did the front cover come with a new pump?

Before someone calls me out on the word I used, I meant "mentally challenged", I'm sorry in advance if I offended anyone.

What about the radiator. Does it need to be cleaned out? I had mine pulled and took it to the rad shop to be hot tanked and it made a difference also the oil cooler was 40% pluged.

Re: need advice after head studs

ok to clear things up the cavitaiton that i saw was on my brothers truck awhile back and thats what made me think it was doing the same thing on this truck. and no i didnt pull the water pump to check on this truck because its a dual alt truck and its a bi*** to get to with that second belt system. but i talked to the guy today and said it pulled like a champ and no temp problems so i guess it was good! personally ive never seen a water pump impeller go bad. not saying that it hasnt happend but i see more cavitiation of front covers than i do water pump blades going.

Re: need advice after head studs

I had my impeller crack from the center to the outer edge. I think it has been thrown away, but if I still have it I will post pictures. I also have not come across a 6.0 waterpump with cavitation problems.
