Re: Evaporator core replacement??????????

Ok, here is the picture guide I put together for the removal of the evaporator core from a 1996 ford f350.

This is the first time I've ever done one, it took about 40 minutes to remove once I had recovered the refrigerant.

In removing the dryer, the threads galled up and forced me to have to replace the evaporator. You could also use this if you wanted to just remove and clean your evaporator core, but a new one ran me 79.99 from Advance Auto Parts.

The evaporator core housing should be a completely sealed unit. As you can see mine wasn't, the foam seals were almost gone, and that's probably how alot of the stuff got in there.

The air inside the cab recirculates air from behind the glove box so it can also pull in trash from the glove box and dirt setting behind the glove box and cab.

Once the evaporator core housing half was removed, I was told when you put it back, use plumbers putty. I bought a butter size tub at Lowe's for 5.99 and would do probably 50 trucks worth. All you do is roll it into a necklace like strand and sandwich it in between the 2 halves. This will seal the case halves. I used closed cell foam with sticky tape on one side from Lowe's to seal where the original foam seals were. I wrapped the foam tape around the orifice tube line and the large line that hooks to the dryer on top to give it a good seal.

I also had to drop the inner fender on the back half to access the 2 bottom screws on the evap core housing.

Re: Evaporator core replacement??????????

When you figure it out, let me know as I am going through the same thing with the AC Compressor constantly engaged. My evaporator is freezing up.

Almost all parts stores carry them....look for one that is listed as adjustable or Variable.....should be about $20, compared to $2..

Do I need the severe duty one (over 105*) or the regular one. It was over 90* here for a few weeks but never really got over 100* mark, hit 100* but not over.
