Getting ready to order my 4" MBRP turbo back, just wondering if it would sound better with or without a muffler? The cat will also be deleted

If you tow heavy (by heavy I mean a big 5th wheel travel trailer or goose neck like I tow) then I say get the muffler. Straight pipe is great just grocery getting and playing bumper cars on the highway during that morning commute to the office. But if you actually "use" the truck it will wear on ya. That's why I am ordering a FTE Resonator once a vendor replies with a good price. Oh and your neighbors will thank you.

its not too loud straight piped....my old truck i ran 5 inches of straight pure love and it sounded awesome. it was loud when you hammered on it but not bad driving normal. i was on 37s and pulled a 7'000 pound horse trailer regularly.

A straight pipe is nice, but Motowns' got it down, with my 12 000lb fifth wheel camper in the Rocky Mtn hills, it makes me regret not getting a muffler sometimes...

straight pipe sounds great when you're juicin it.. but the drone gets old. i ended up adding a magnaflo muff to my 4" setup. no loss in power, still sounds good, and the cab is a much happier place!

Think ll go with the straight exhaust, can always add a muffler later. My truck s an 03 that i mostly drive on the weekends and pull the odd trailer, nothing bigger than a car trailer

What if you go from just the cat back. I just got an 03 all stock and I was thinking about just taking out the muffler and running some tunes in her.

Both! Get a muffler and a piece of pipe made that will fit in the mufflers spot. When you get tired of the note put the muffler in. I do this exact thing and its the best of both worlds. My only complaint is I should have used 5" pipe instead of 4". Imo, a 5" straight is louder than running an open downpipe. Not in the truck but to the rest of the world.

I was told the cat is really restrictive on these trucks, thats why its goin before i run tunes

+1 for strait pipe.. It's not bad in the cab at all. I have to open the slider to really hear it. It sounds great pulling a heavy trailer. If you get sick of it you can always add a muffler.

I have that exact same system with no cat, it came with a muffler and a delete pipe. I installed it with the delete pipe which sounded great. After a few months of listening to the wife whine about it, I spent a couple of hours putting the muffler on. I then went to run some errands and couldn't beleive how quiet the damn muffler was, it sounded stock. I then spend a couple of hours taking the muffler back off and put the straight pipe back on.

i never heard that the muffler made that much of a differnce, i thought it just took away from the sssssssssss sound(not to be confused with whistle) of the large volume of air passing through it, looks like i have yet another spring break project

The muffler kills the whole exhaust note...no turbo whistle and no pulse sounds. It pretty much burbles a little bit and the injectors/clatter are all you'll really hear. I suppose the 6l will still whistle like a gazoo even with a muffler. Its pretty much a one or the other, as there is no 'best of both worlds' solution.

At cruising the exhaust IS fairly quiet, fwiw.

Just ordered the 4" turbo back. No cat, no muffler

When i ordered my kit (MBRP 4" turbo back w/ exhaust delete, cat delete pipes) the muffler came with the system. I drove it for over a year straight piped and it's a sweet sound, but it got old. I kept the cat delete in place and ended up putting the straight thru muffler on. I'm very happy with the way it sounds, still gets plenty loud when punching it.

So long and short, if your system ends up coming with the muffler...try out both and see what sounds good to your ears.

mine has "muffler", which is basically just a glasspack, its quiet when just cruisin but still loud when you giv'er

and still get decent turbo whistle with the intake

like said, if you tow a lot or do long distance trips i'd say go with a muff, but it's really up to you

I have a little drone in the cab at freeway speeds so I think I'll grad a muffler for when I go on long trips
