97/7.3 that I am replacing the UVCH plus VC gaskets (cause it will not start & these were fried); while I have the VCs off & UVCHs disconnected, can I crank (no start) & check the injectors?? I did a search & did not find a answer. I saw somewhere about looking for oil coming out; at the top, base or where?

oil would come out of the tubes on the side of the injectors under the plug

make sure you torque the injectors down before you re-install the Valve covers....( 10 lbs-ft.)

This mean they are working effectively or does the electrical portion have to be determined by another method??

Also: thanks for the torque info!!

that means that they are working properly

Wouldn't the oil coming back out the of the injector just mean it is oiling properly and kind of rule out O-Rings only?? To check the Injector Solenoids wouldn't you have to run a Buzz Test?? Someone correct me if I'm wrong please, I'm a newb to these engines also.

not necessarily because the injector has to be firing in the first place to be spitting oil. so if it is spitting oil then it is indeed firing. if not firing oil unplug that individual injector when the truck is running and if the tone of the engine changes then it iss still firing. if the tone of the engine does not change then that injector is not firing

Good Info: at the present truck is not running; so crank to see if oil is coming out, then attach harness wires; start truck; if it runs erratic, then disconnect each injector to see which is misfiring; like a gas w/plugs.
Thanks will update ASA weather permits.

To check for oil coming out the spouts, you will have to have the harnesses connected. Then crank it (or just start it) and look to see if the oil out of each spout is somewhat consistent with each other. If one or more does not have oil (or very little), those will be your problems. In that case it could be a bad solenoid, loose poppet screw, wiring problems, etc.). Cheers!

Rob: I am like you trying to learn; these guys are great; good to know someone has done it before; my logic is that the injectors have to operate similiar to the plug system on a gas burner; got to fire in sequence. I figured: got the VCs off do all you can before reattachment.
Thanks guys

ASA weather permits will update the board on my project truck; 97/7.3 that I posted about the crank, no start.

I've been super pleased with the wealth of knowledge, and the great support from the vendors here. So remember IF you need parts ask here first. These guys here will more than likely take care of you if you dont have to have it at the drop of a hat.

VC Plugs inner engine section:
I got some new plugs to replace these with; noticed there is a bare wire that does not connect to anything but loops near the plug; must be some kind of ground. Also; these wires are wrapped in foil; must be to insulate from heat.
Anyone know what this bare wire is?
