So I had a 84 and a 86 6.9 ford diesel trucks but then i bought some dodge diesels. I hate dodge so i am looking to buy a 93-97 f350 and put a cummins in it. What are the common problems with fords?

the one thing i hate about the 94-97 powerstrokes is the mech fuel system  its always leak here leak there terrible pressure.

The cummins will delete any problems there! Ive always wanted a ford body with a cummins and an allison trans

Rust, finding parts, 3/4 ton 4WD suspension, fuel tanks rot, nothing really wrong with the engine minus the intake box and downpipe.

Oh yeah, that would be sweet. I love the Powerstroke, but the common rail Cummins is just insanely awesome.:drool::drool:

yeah, i would love a 5.9 common rail. dont like the sound of the 6.7 or the siamesed cylinder walls

so the frames, wiring harness, and body doesnt have any issues?

i've got a '99 24valve cummins sitting out in the drive way, i like the truck, but it is starting to act like a typical dodge, pieces are starting to break on it ( not the drivetrain or powertrain, well excluding the transmission ) interior wise. i know several people who describe having their dodges "falling apart around them" the engine is the best part of the truck, drop it into whatever you want and be done imho.

None of those issues. Truck is tough as nails. Can't put many miles on the 7.3's though. Mine is only pushing 300K.

I am pretty sure I personally looked at a truck with over 400 k, but that was a while ago.

I am putting a 12V cummins in this ex AF truck:

I was able to directly compare my 94.5 F350 with a 95 D3500? of a friends last year(diesel duals, manuals). I'll list the positives and negative of both......

Ford,
Good, body and frame still good, no rust through, brakes hoses and tubing still good, interior still very good for age, exhaust intact, chasis wiring and plugs still very good, working A/C

Bad,

powerstroke complexity, injectors easily damaged, engine wiring corrodes and breaks when you have to change an injector, prone to various electrical engine management failures, turbo pedestal leak prone, people ask entirely too much out of the block not built for high HP.

Dodge,
Good, cummins and transmission, pulls smoothly and shifts well, better LO gear is great, interior holding up well

Bad, pretty much everything else, lift pump fails and kills injector pump(certain years), wear in the light switch causes multiple things not to work or short out, the same with the door switches, body and frame rusted close to failure, brake hard lines rusted through and failed, exhaust rusted through several places, 80's interior styling,

I got the Dodge experience first hand because we had to work on it two days before we need to haul a racecar 900 miles. We also had to work on it several times while at the race. The wiring of the Dodge truck is insane. Several people I know that have had both the Powerstrokes and Dodge Cummins have had the same results.

I almost forgot, the Dodge Death Wobble.

you sure have a bunch to hate em lol. i like the orange and the blue duallies. never looked at a 1st gen real close but the 2nd gens have a very cheesy chassis. frame looks like its for a subaru and that junk front end setup. at least the 5spd 2500s and all 3500s come w/ a good rear.

if you look at the odometer when you first turn the key on, you will notice that there isnt even the proper dash on the last number to make the 4 in 400,000

So a truck that shows more than 300k can actually have 4,5 or 700k on it??

How well does the Cummins 12v stack up power wise to the 7.3 ?

swamp_ratt

How well does the Cummins 12v stack up power wise to the 7.3 ?

well the 12v is mechanical so therefore power is all hard parts where as the 7.3 is electrical so you can get power out of chips. however being the 7.3 is an older motor most of your power is going to come from hard parts. the tuning on these is more or less to get it to run properly when all put together. newer electronic motors have the capability of around 600 whp on a tune with exhaust and intake only

Ol'Blue
01-30-2011, 08:12 PM
I love my 7.3 as far as the engine goes, but I'm sick of the crappy fuel, and electrical issues.
i.e. glow plug system electrically checks out, but cel is always on for it.
everyone knows about obs mechanical fuel system issues.
ebpv coming on at the strangest times and if it's 50* or less it comes on almost non-stop with new turbo/ped assy. new sensors and computer.

Mechanical all the way around sounds nice.

12v is slower stock to stock with a same year ford. But 2 hours of free upgrades make Cummins alot more powerfull and reliable. AN cheaper then a ford diesel.
