Some might be good, but in my own personal experience, they suck ass. My father in law has a 2001 V10 F250 that wont pull worth a damn compared to either of our diesels. The mileage isnt anything to write home about either.

there are a few problems with that year of v10, it can blow the plugs out of the head due to lack of threads from the factory and check the exhaust manifolds, chances are it has some studs missing that have snapped off. Both these repairs will cost you some money to have repaired good bargaining tool. These are common problems with the 4.6,5.4 and 6.8 from 97-03. The newer engines(03-10) the plugs just snap off in the head.

I've heard about that before.
We've never had any problems with our 03 V10. Hmmm.
We also tow our camping trailer with it and still no problems. It's got 76K. It's a Excursion by the way.

On all of my research on V-10's the '99-2001 versions had the most issues. That being said, they had alot less TSB's than the 7.3's during the same period. Most complaints were from the lack of depth on the spark plugs thus blowing out, but again, that was on a very small percentage of engines. There is a coil fix for that if it ever happens. Personally, I would be as much concerned with the tranny than the engine. If it's an automatic, then expect trouble. The 2005 V-10 and up would be my first choice due to the upgrade in HP and the new Torqueshift tranny.

My co-worker just picked up a v-10 ( '01 I believe ). When he has his 5th wheel & boat in tow he is lucky to get 6mpg.

Had a 99 with the v-10. First engine exploded literally at 86k. It had minimal power at best. Put a brand new crate engine in, in its place and wasn't impressed at all. If you plan to tow just buy a diesel ans save yourself the headaches.

But at least he made it to-and-from w/o breaking down. Try looking at the TSB's for that particular year between a diesel and a gasser (5.4 or 6.8) and you will see that the cost of a diesel is much more overall than a gas rig. You can't go on just fuel mileage differences, but need to add ALL of the maintenance costs. No doubt you can find a 6.0 leaker that is out of warranty REALLY cheap, but you will not like it when all of the "fixes" go bad and you wind up paying out of your pocket.

So, from someone who had a 2000 F250 Shortbed Crewcab 4x4, it was the best engine I ever owned, save for the V6 I had in my wifes Camry

I had a lance fully self contained cabover camper on it and I towed a jeep wrangler and I would climb the grapevine here in California doing 75, passing all these idiots in there 4/6 cyl mini vans that would be bogged down and overheating going over the pass. :evil

It was flawless. I can only tell you my experience but I never had any problems towing, and that included very steep forest service roads to go deer hunting with the camper on the back and jeep in tow

The problem is mileage. Going flat across nevada at 65 mph with the camper on the back, maybe 8MPG. Going over the pass from Northern calif to Nevada with the camper on the back doing 60-65 towing the jeep, 3 MPG. No Sh*t.

With the short bed the tank is only 29 gallons and I ended up selling and getting an 07 6.0L due to range. I just had to keep stopping sometimes every 160 miles, it was a drag.

But as far as performance, power and for me reliability, it was great.

I would recommend the V10 engine to anyone.
