No Start after Injector install

Did the DIY injectors and found one injector not firing properly after rebuild. It turned out to be a plugged nozzle. Got a new nozzle and reinstalled injector. I started the truck with the VC off to see if everything was working properly. Had to shut the truck down after about 1 min because there was a lot of smoke in the garage. Put the VC back on and started her back up She ran until I got out the garage door and then it just died. The rpms started going down and I couldn't give it throttle and then she died. Now, it doesn't barely try to start, just cranks. I've done everything I could think of so now I need you're help, big time. It's really bothering me that the truck doesn't run at all but it ran fine after initial rebuild (except for dead injector) Thanks

Glad you answered Dave. I wanted to answer but had nary a clue.

Have you checked your fuel pressure, is it possible you're not getting fuel now(FP died), preventing it from starting? Just a thought?

Fuel is good, oil is good. It now will start for about 20 sec and then start to die and eventually stall. When it is running, it sounds fine until it starts to die and then it starts knocking. I'm glad you responded Golfer as I'm sure you have installed many injectors and have probably experienced something similar. I just need to know what to do next. Do I keep trying? Remove VC? Remember, it ran fine after initial injector install (except for a slight miss) and now won't even start.

As for fuel, I can get it to start if I hold open the schraeder valve on the FPR, there seems to be decent fuel flowing but truck still dies after about 20 secs.

loud knocking you say??

sounds like someone didn't seat the injectors ALLLL the way down in the injector cup, and you have straight-ass fuel pouring into the cylinder...

the knocking is nothing more than a partial 'hydraulic' on the cylinder every time the piston comes up to TDC... <<<you *might* wanna fix that first.

what I see from reading this, is that you have 2 problems.

One, an injector is not bolted down all the way (or a VERY, VERY leaky nozzle)..and two, an injector with some out of whack poppet to armature clearances...(runs until the oil gets up to temperature & thins out...then the HPOP can't keep up with a puking poppet, ICP falls, truck dies, truck won't restart until oil cools off< lather, rinse, repeat)

take care~

I had a buddy that didnt tighten the injector body up all the way. It did the exact same thing as you are describing qcfarmer.

Since I only took out the one injector I can assume it is that one that is loose? It seemed to be seated fine when I re-installed it. I will check when I get home. I left for Fla this morning to watch the Daytona 500 and return Monday

That was my problem and the truck wouldn't start. I've done them a few times my rule of thumb is if it doesn't start within 30 mins you probably have a bad injector or didn't hook up your harness correctly.

By injector body do you mean the injector is loose in the hole or the actual injector when I took it apart to change the nozzle is loose. They were all torqued when being re-assembled (the injector themselves)

Well first of all from what I learned is don't put the VC back on until everything is right. It gets frustrating taking that thing off and plus you wanna look at what your injectors are doing first. There are two ways that I know of to tell if you have a bad one. Turn the motor over and look at the oil spout and see which one is putting too much or too little oil out. Puking oil (which mine did) or none at all=bad injector. Now if the engine is running but not sounding right (which mine did also) I bought a $19.99 IR thermy at Autozone and point to each exhaust manifold. I think at idle is was like 230* and one of mine was reading 170*. I don't know your specific problem but after messing up 3 DIY kits I've found some solutions to fixing them.

The DIY kits are really easy the hard part for me is my ADD kicks in around the 7th one and I either try to rush or start that Did I do that to that last injector. Like I said I've messed up about 3 (my brother in laws, my stage 2's then my stage 3's) I think my brother in laws the magnet was flipped, my stage 2's a dow pin had broke so I used an allen wrench (which is why I now always order the parts kit) and my last one I don't think was my fault I believe the bottom injector body was outta wack because until I put another bottom body on it would never work correctly.

Sorry for the long post just trying to give you my experience with these to get you in the right direction. My opinion you have a bad injector and just trying to help you find it.

I really appreciate your help and everyone else who has helped me. I will pull the vc when I get home. It doesn't start so should the injectors spit oil? I have ADD also and thats probably how a piece of something plugged the nozzle to start with. It may just be that I was so excited to feel the extra power

unplug ALL of the injectors (electrically)...

then have someone crank the truck.

no injectors should have any oil spurting out of the oil deflector...or any where else for that matter since they are unplugged...

the leaker(s) is where the problem lies.

take care~

quick update. Pulled the faulty injector again, The bottom half was loose (D'oh). I tightened it up and put it back in. Truck started almost immediately but the injector still wasn't firing right (like not at all) I had oil but when I unplugged that injector, no change in sound. Called Jim he said must be in the fuel end of the injector. Out it came again and back apart to realize the dowel pins had broken and nothing was lining up anymore. Replaced dowel pins, put the injector back together and back in the truck and fired her up. Truck was smooth and all injectors were firing. Put VC back on and drove her for about 15 miles. Called it a day. This morning, it seems to be running on only 7 cylinders again so I will check my exhaust manifolds to see if all injectors are working. If it is the same one again, I think i will buy new internals for it. Thanks for all the help and if anyone has a spare injector lying around, I might be interested in it

qc, are you using the same orings? I've still got a miss after a Stage 2 DIY install. It's driving me crazy too. First I found the FPR screen clogged. After I cleaned that, it felt better. But when I start it cold, it idles angry, and on the top end it sounds like I have a rev limiter at about 2900rpm's.

Dave, do most problem injectors leak when unplugged? I never thought of trying that.

found what was making it miss the second time. The plunger in the fuel end of the injector was stuck closed. Whatever plugged the nozzle must have scratched the plunger and made it stick. I took some sandpaper and smoothed it out and now it runs like a top.
