This used to get towed a LOT, became unstreetable, had a full roadrace suspension under it, corbeau trs seats, big stereo and all the cool factor amenities, handled like a slotcar on the 17" wheels...but bucking at cruising speeds on the highway gets old, and feathering the throttle to keep from obliterating the tires in 3rd gear was the downside.

i know how that is. 840 rwhp on pumpgas is a hanful on the street but calm at the same time. mine actually handle the highway nicely for having a glide in it

Al Mighty
12-31-2010, 02:22 AM
Lol well there's about a 300 rw difference there! It had ice cold ac in it, but you'd get heat from the longtubes start coming through if you were iddling or slowly moving. Had badass brakes on it at one time, but after a good hard pull, vacuum was a tad low to run em etc. It was a blast with a stock motor and running 13.8's in full street trim with 3.55's. I made it more fun/finicky to drive with each mod :-/

86lxnotch
12-31-2010, 02:29 AM
lol i had manual brakes with sn95 stuff in the front and strange discs in the back. went 143mph on 92 oct wawa pumpgas(turbo). my wife had a 04 v6 stang i turboed and that went 12.57@113 on 18'' michelins. that was a FUN car lol. towed that thing 500 miles through the hills in WV with a 7.3 idi and i will NEVER do that again!

BOOM was my POS 6.0 on the highway W my 37 footer behind me, no warning at all. 2006 f 250 2x4 I bought it brand new off the lot. Dealership said #2 cyl. injector failed, hydro locked & pulled the rod in two pieces I guess. I got to see it & the crank was twisted in half, literally in two separate pieces!! Looked like a bomb went off in the oil pan, there was aluminum everywhere!!

Ford did very good though 100% warranty I didnt pay $1 not even a tow bill for the truck or the trailer.

my old truck had the extra overload springs the DA ordered it with them, it had a 3in rack front to back.
It rode like a 2 horse wagon on a cobble stone road unless it was loaded.
the only time i had it leveled was when i had a little over 5,000 lb or rock put on the bed for the drive way.

No, an idiot deputy on I-70 in Indiana passed the truck on the left and then swerved in front over onto the shoulder. Then he opened his door and hit the fender with his door. The impact destroyed his door and fender, and drove the fender into the grill and bumper. State Farm said it was our fault, because we "failed to yield to an emergency vehicle."

Damn !!! I was hauling the 44'er up through Tennessee last week and a Trooper cut me off to get the little red BMW that jumped in front of me to "try" to hide from the Trooper that got him on radar. The Trooper went from 90 to nothing right in front of me. I would have killed him I wasn't paying attention and got it all slowed down in time.

Really? Apparently it's my fault regardless. How else exactly can you yield to an "Emergency Vehicle" that passes on the left, with lights and sirens turned on, and then swerves over in front of the truck onto the shoulder and then immediately opens his door? All that could be done is what WAS done, which was to slow down and stay over in the right lane to let him pass. The truck was going under 30 mph, with the emergency flasher on no less. It was impossible to change lanes over to the left lane after he passed due to traffic, and due to the fact that he swerved over about two car lengths in front of the truck and took the shoulder. You can't just swerve to the other lane when your a CC/LB Dually pulling a 30' trailer. Who could have predicted that the idiot would swerve over in front of the truck onto the shoulder? I got a copy of the police report - it basically states that the Deputy was sitting on the shoulder, minding his own business, and my truck just happened to come along and sideswipe him! The report was "written" by a local city cop that they called to the scene to do the "investigation." All that DB had to do was wait another few seconds for the truck to pass and nothing would have happened. Instead, he opens his door into oncoming traffic. I bet he wasn't trained to do that.

That sux. I think I'd be getting a lawyer and have his in-car camera vid subpoenaed (if it hasn't disappeared by now) or a recording of his radio calls (should be able to tell if he had been just sitting there from that).

I tried to get State Farm to get the dashcam video, but they weren't interested. If it was completely up to me I would have fought the ticket, but ultimately it wasn't worth missing work and driving out of state to go to court. That's when they depend on, obviously.

i had the truck for about an hr and was showing it to my dad (he is a painter) and he said it couldn't be plain white so if i bought the supplies and helped, he'd spray it. I found tangerine orange in House of Kolor catalog (i love orange) and it kinda went from there, he did all the design work and such, looks way better in the sun

I wouldn't count on it being the main breadwinner (especially if you have a new truck you're trying to pay for...). but, you should get used to spending time down in the ghetto where the scrap yards are. :D Sometimes, the lines can get pretty long. I've never been to the scrap yards themselves, always drove by on our way to a jobsite.

If it pushes the back of the truck up, it is going to transfer weight to the front. The ass end squatting down pulls weight off the front. Being that trailer is a gooseneck I'd venture to say that he still has quite a bit of weight on the front end, but just that much more on the back lol.

sounds more like the gooseneck ball needs to be moved more forward of the rear axle so there could be more weight on the front axle

Wouldnt be enough of a benefit to move it forward, stiffer springs or bags is the only options really.

This would be true if the truck had a fixed pivot point between the front and rear axles but that would be a bracket attached to the road and would not really be practical (hard to move when your truck is bolted down). The actual pivot point when you use airbags is the front axle, there is minimal weight transfer by simply jacking the back up. You need to use weight distribution, but that is not possible on a gooseneck trailer. The other option would be move the hitch ball forward to shift weight from the rear axle to the front. It will make it look safer but will not actually make it safer.

Try weighing the front axle with bags deflated then inflated. I have been in trucking 35 years, 20 in maintenance management (supervising and managing truck repair shops), 10+ as a driver (trying to get axle weights right, which is what the purpose is here). I know whereof I speak.

:whs: You're right. Stiffer springs, airbags, etc., will only keep ya from blinding oncoming traffic. A fact a lot of people don't think/care about.:(
Weight doesn't move horizontally, it moves vertically, mean old Mr. Gravity.

Al Mighty

He still has plenty of weight on his front tiress. A gooseneck wil transfer weight to both axles. I'd say he is still over 4,000 lbs on his front axle.

Weight doesn't move horizontally??? Ever hear of shifting the weight? I assume you have slid s fifth wheel before to move more weight to or from the front axle.

I think what chris was trying to say is with enough drive axle weight to the point it starts pushing the back of the truck down that far, it will start lifting the weight off of the steer tires. Raise the back of the truck up enough, it will counter that effect by requiring more downward force on the back of the truck to lighten up the front end. Same thing as leverage, or a see saw. Nobody said it would make the back lighter and the front heavier, or that they would double the carrying capacity of a truck.

Oh, just once or twice!!LOL I usually get it right the first try.;)

Let me see if I can explain myself better. When you slide the fifth wheel forward, I'll use that as example rather than the tandems, You ARE transferring more weight to the front axle. Slide it back, and you lessen the weight. You will still have the same amount of weight on the pin,[vertical], but you've moved the fulcrum rearward, so yes, you've moved the fulcrum horizontally, and the weight has shifted as well, but it's still a vertical force being applied. The only way to shift the weight on that pickup, is to move the pin forward/rearward, moving the hinge pointe, [fulcrum]. You've still got the same weight on the pin.
By putting airbags/more springs on, you are not shifting any weight. You're only lifting the load higher, reducing the nose up attitude of the truck. No weight has been moved anywhere.
I think we're both saying the same thing.
I think if weight could be shifted horizontally, we'd have a whole different set of scales!LOL

God, you are not listening to me! If you air up the air bags all the way, despite the axle weight staying the same, that weight is indeed moving!! If your pin was at 21", and you inflate the bags, your pin height is now...say, 24". Therefore the pin weight did move. 3 inches to be exact. Forget to brake, and $20.00 says it will move vertically! Don't argue with a driver, you will always be wrong ;)

Not sure. I borrowed it from my father in law's construction company to unload pallets of mulch we bought for the church. they had it loaded on that trailer sitting in the yard when I went and picked it up. Others who saw that pic said the trailer wasnt heavy enough for the machine too....

I also found out my trailer brake controller didnt work while pulling that thing. Luckily I was on backroads pulling at low speed...

Both M's I thought, they are not my tractors hauled them for a fella, had a heck of a time getting to them. Posted roads, but I didn't see any water running :lookaround: :lookaround: :lookaround: :lookaround:

He bought them at a estate sale, now plans to be haying with them by the end of the summer. Just a hobby for him though, not sure of the years of these tractors either.

Likely early '50's, '40's. Good old tractors. I just can't use my '41 A for anything but play, and parades. That thing deserves a rest, but a lot of guys still work them.;)

This isn't me towing, but I thought y'all would get a kick out of the pics.

This is the house my father-in-law was born in. He donated it to the local historical society as the centerpiece for a historical village they're building.

Yes, Ohio is home to the world's largest Amish population, and Kiddron is heavily populated w/them. My father-in-law's farm is about 2-2.5 miles cross country from the heart of Kiddron.
Being from PA. your no strainger to them either. :pointlaugh:

If you're familiar with the area, maybe there are others too. If you guys think I should start a thread on the move of this and the construction of the village I could start a new one. They say it will take about 5 years to complete. Let me know what y'all think.

Ya, do it. I think it's interesting myself. There are quite a few Amish and Mennonite people up here. You won't find a nicer, harder working people anywhere. Anyone that willingly lives/works like they do get my respect. Oh man, don't get me going on the food.;)

wasnt very fun when we pulled up and I ripped the wires out of the plug and had no lights or brakes....and almost broke my rear window out. Needless to say, this was a one time thing.
