Michael 07-13-2010, 03:54 PM Yes those chains have been put on shorter... That was the first time I hooked up the trailer. I now have them so they are almost horizontal just in case.
Yup, I figured as much. First time I towed my flatbed race car trailer with the camper on, I ended up grinding my chains until the first fuel stop. They're overkill for the weight of the trailer, so they're at least safe with the amount that got ground off of the lowest links ;) One of these days I'll replace them, but in the meantime I use a bungee cord to hold them up in the center while allowing enough chain length to jacknife the trailer when backing it into my garage.
Looks like I screwed up posting the photo in my post above, here it is:

What brand and weight rating hitch do you have?
Michael 07-13-2010, 11:31 PM It's a Torklift Super-Hitch, rated at 1500/15000 weight carrying, 1700/17000 weight distributing. Now all I need is a heavier weight distribution head for when I use the WD system on my own big trailer, the head I have is only rated for 1000/10000.

DieselFreak92 08-11-2010, 08:36 PM Yesterday I towed a 3500lbs dump trailer around for a friend and she did it like a champ, even after we added about another ton of cinderblocks to it. It was the first time I had ever towed and it was pretty funny and alot easier then I thought. I just had to pay attention to my mirrors, the roadlines, and corners. After we were done I had to tow a a bobcat rental back to the rental place because all my friend has is a 5.2L Ram 1500

Depending on the manufacturer its a sport cabin or sport fisher. My boat is a 25' 1978 Buxon. Buxton closed up shop a while back. Im currently rebuilding it. All I need to get her afloat is an outboard gauges and controls.

That looks very familiar to a situation I was in. Trailer was only a dual axle 8x24 enclosed. Snow was much higher (above the bumpers) and I didn't make it out. :pointlaugh: Figured I'd drop the trailer, and be able to drive out , but what was under the fresh snow was sheer ice, I got another maybe 10 feet and was buried. Got out the next day when the neighbor had woke up and came over with his tractor and chains to clean up the yard.

Sprman 09-29-2010, 02:23 AM This is for those that say you can't tow a 5th wheel with a lift. 4.5" lift (closer to 5" after adding the 1"traction blocks). Trip was around 600 miles from Texas to Alabama.
Bout 11K behind it

Slated4Greatness 09-29-2010, 03:51 PM You can tow flat and level with a lift but don't try to go up/down any steep inclines like into a service station. Look how close the nose of the trailer is to the bed of your truck. Not bagging on you just more of a be careful statement.
Sprman 09-29-2010, 05:31 PM You can tow flat and level with a lift but don't try to go up/down any steep inclines like into a service station. Look how close the nose of the trailer is to the bed of your truck. Not bagging on you just more of a be careful statement.
It's got more room that you think. It actually has about 1/2" more than when it was at stock height. From the pic, it looks closer than it is. I've gone up and down steep inclines and not even touched it. The B&W companion hitch is awesome with the adjustability of it which helps out.
Slated4Greatness 09-29-2010, 09:18 PM I had my axles flipped and extended the kingpin down a few notches so it sits level with my truck at stock height and there is over a foot of space between the bed and trailer now.. I feel much better about heading off into the dunes now.. Didn't know you had a B&W, is it a auto slider?
BIGCSS 10-01-2010, 07:41 AM Here's a couple things I tow. My jet boat regularly, and sometimes the flat bed (but usually with my tractor on it) this time with my buddies rock crawler and my quad on it.

I was in Centralia MO. They have those things all over. If your careful your tires wont touch. There is about an inch or so on each side so its tricky but can be done. No its not mine, if it was that C-15 would be cranked to 550. That dock is like that so the fork lift can get right up to the trailer to stack those things up.
Brought them out to a solar farm in southern NJ. Pretty neat to see a solar farm being built. After they complete this one they will be the 2nd largest solar energy state in the country next to CA.

I always liked that C15, mine were at 475, but put another 75 ponies on that, and it oughta fly! The only skateboarding I did was with a 53' Reitnouer Big Bubba spread. The rear axle was set forward like a 48', and you really had to be careful with the DOT bumper, it sat pretty low. Oh, AND it was a rolltop!! No tarping for this guy!!! Dragged that with a 379, 500 Cummins, and of course, a 13!:D
That's interesting about Jersey, I'd have never thought that! I've seen them build the windfarms in Iowa, that was impressive as well!:D

Heck that 450 shouldn't even break a sweat with only 13K on it.. Looks nice!

They come factory level now, instead of with a slight rake. I did put taller blocks in the rear on this truck to give it a slight rake, but the main spring pack is softer than I would have thought, though they did put 2 sets of overloads on it from the factory for the load carrying. I probably should have backed the truck that's on the trailer back a little farther to lighten the tongue weight a tad, but it was sitting on both overloads and it handled it just fine. Also I'm figuring it was a 14K load since the trailer is 5k unloaded, that with what is always carried in my Dad's truck.
OldschoolPSD 11-20-2010, 10:58 PM Its taking a lot of weight off the front axle too when its loaded like that. The back is probably not squatting as bad as it looks, it probably lifted the front end and inch or two as well
genuineford 11-21-2010, 12:25 AM A little cancer didn't hurt anybody. That is the ultimate I don't give a fawk about anything that happens to this truck. As long as it runs and the 4x4 works, then to hell with it:D
Yeah I only paid $300 for the truck so I am not too worried about it. I put another $300 or so getting it fixed so it is drivable.

Does not look like it would be anywhere near 14k
BIGCSS 11-21-2010, 04:17 AM Does not look like it would be anywhere near 14k
Sorry I might have been a couple hundred pounds heavy on my estimate. But that trailer has a weight of 5k on the title that came with it when I bought it new (it's rated for 14k gross) and I have ran that truck across the scales before and the way it sits, with what we carry in the cab and bed it's almost 9k (this was my truck until my Dad bought it from me and he carries the same things I did). Any how I was pretty close on my estimate, the last time I hauled about the same amount (my tractor/loader with 2 implements) was with my old GMC 3500 and if it hadn't had airbags that I could fill to 70 psi, it was flat scary to try and control, this truck I can't even tell a difference in the handling.:ford:

Ahh I've been in docks like that, NEPW in Paris, ME is a bad one, used to haul plywood out if there, dock was built when trailers where 96" wide so the dock is only about 105" wide and you can not get the truck and trailer straight in line with it so it ends up being almost an ally dock. Fun times! Good lookin Pete...short hood though huh?

If you would have read the post instead of lookin @ the pics only and coming to the conclusion im a maniac ripping down the highway just cuz it'll move it is unreasonable and just plain wrong. No where in there did I say that I took it down a highway for any amount of time.
What I DID say is it handled it the short trip to the scales and that I DIDNT tow it the 200 mile trip. I dont have access to a set of porta-scales when im 20 miles in the boonies on dirt roads so I find the closest COOP that runs scales 8-5 and weigh out so I KNOW WHAT IM RUNNING down the highway yeah im usually overweight, but within reason. Thats why I built the truck like i did to handle pulling lots of weight, while not abusing it and being within 1000-1500 lbs of door sticker weight and im tagged for 26,000lbs
The bent rear axle has nothing to do with overloading it. Its called an in-experienced driver I hired taking a corner too short with a LEGAL load on it.
Im my field of work (scrapping/recycling) this kinda situation is bound to happen more than I would like it to.
I take accusations of this kind seriously, and I know I came off as a dick but as a CDL holder we are held to a different standard than all the rest of the motoring public thats why I took it back and unloaded a 1/3 of the load.
Im going to think twice about posting up anymore of my heavy loads.

There are a lot of ppl that are legal weight wise and there brakes or lights or hitches are not working or junk. I personlly would rather have a overweight than stuff not working.

MILFORD 12-14-2010, 01:58 AM All depends what state your in and how bad the DOT officer wanted to screw you. I for one can say I always run legal. Especially with weight. LOL But Its kinda hard to go over in the rig that I drive.
Mpoage 12-14-2010, 02:04 AM 50 Ton Beam Trailer.
Ive never seen a triple axle, only tandems. My grandpa has two tandem dually trailers though. What brand is that?

Its a down to earth, pretty sturdy only thing i dont like is how far the axles are set back on the trailer.

I try to keep from thinking that, I havent done the math of what it would be, but @ most two tons over my plates which is what they mostly care about where I come from. I dont touch their normal 20K/per axle limit on all NE roadways. Plus im not hauling commercially its my personal goods within 200mi of my home. I load from a remote site and its tough to gauge what I have on and be within 3,000 lbs. I worry about the DOT, but I dont even hafta run logbooks so they are hell-bent if they are gonna stop me @ 3am on a desolate highway going 50-55mph I double up all my chains and give traffic plenty of room. Im as safe as I can be and still be able to have the ability to live paycheck to paycheck.
OldschoolPSD 12-14-2010, 08:25 PM Not directed to anyone in general... but why do guys seem to think the F-450 is the end all, be all of trucks? For 10k you could be in a nice used single axle International and be able to tow that weight legally and without tearing up the truck.

I think that everytime someone says get a 450. But a tractor doesn't suit a whole lot of peoples needs, if you were frequently that heavy yes a class 6-7 rig could be had for the same cost of a 450. It costs a little bit more to operate, but hey if you need that much truck it shouldn't be an issue.
The only things a 450 has thats different than a 350 anyway is brakes, tires, axles, and a different door sticker.

And a different frame. If the VIN# starts with 1FT the frame doesn't climb up after the rear of the cab. It's a straight frame to all the way through. The hangers for the leafs are different as well. Different fuel tank location.

Im not trying to say its the "end all be all"... but F450/550s are different animals... They dont even share the same frame as an F350 DRW.
When I bought my F550, I wanted a slightly higher rating than the F350 offered, and had to have 4x4. F650's didnt come factory 4x4, neither did the nice lo-pro RV hauler rigs.

I pull with mine all the time and it's tuned with the original HG's and bolts. It's a Wednesday truck!!!
I pull 13-14K 2-3 times a month through the mountains of AZ and CA..
JimTJr 12-19-2010, 01:31 PM I have a few pictures, but no time to post. My 03 F-350 dually is the one I have worked the hardest. 7.3L motor. BTS trans, Heaviest I have grossed is 29,500 lbs. with a load of pipe on my 32' Kaufman Flat bed. I hauled 3 cars on my 43' with 3' flip outs on it. Many times.
Pulled like a dream.
To the guy who posted above with the tag and Mustang..."I'm waiting on my B&W" You'll love it. I just put one on my '11, the dually had one on it when I bought it. If you were thinking of installing it yourself, go ahead, it's an easy install.
I also have the Companion 5th wheel from them.
JimTJr 12-19-2010, 04:11 PM Here's that load of Ballisters,

I have the B&W turnover & Companion 5th wheel also. Best hitch setup I've ever had. Used to use all Reese stuff & switched to B&W after helping a friend install one on his truck. The jaws on the companion lock so much tighter than the reese jaws, it pretty much eliminated the chucking I was getting pulling the RV. Excellent hitch system.
86lxnotch 12-19-2010, 10:18 PM jimtjr- thanks i plan on doin it myself. hopefully i can handle the install.......building a 1k hp mustang isnt easy so hopefully this is lol
JimTJr 12-20-2010, 01:15 AM You will maybe need to lift the bed on one side. Not sure on the older model trucks. I did on my '11. Other than that, it was easy as can be.

No need to touch any of the bed bolts. Mine went right in very nice and smooth.

Motownfire 12-26-2010, 03:43 PM Nice trailer. I am shopping around for a 40'er. Is it really heavy in the front or what??
Al Mighty 12-27-2010, 04:10 AM I wouldn't say it's heavy in the front. If anything it looks a little light in the ass ;)

86lxnotch 12-29-2010, 01:50 AM No need to touch any of the bed bolts. Mine went right in very nice and smooth.
mine would have went in smooth had the PO not overload the bed to hell. bowed down pretty good between the ribs. took a little fanagaling and some handy work from the bfh but it went it smooth otherwise. only thing left is to drill the holes for the safety chain brackets. i drilled the hole last night (half hour to 45 min) and took a hour and 15 to install the hitch itself tonight. rather quick i think! gonna drive it a few days and go over the bolts and retorque them and then again after i tow with it the first time
