moonshiner 12-28-2007, 04:02 AM I just ordered myself some new 35x14x16.5 ground hawgs and was thinking about upgrading my rear diff. I cant decide between the Detroit Locker or the True-trac.
I do alot of highway driving and also alot of off-road driving too.
What would be a good bet?
Cat_Rebel 12-28-2007, 04:44 AM The locker is only about $160 more & if your not doing alot of town driving I'd go for it. Nothing wrong with the True Trac though, that's what the boss (Bigrpower) has on his truck.
urbanwheeler 12-30-2007, 05:20 AM it really depends on what kind of off roading you do, whether it is rocks, snow, sand, mud, etc... and how much. the pros to a true trac are that it is nice to tires, it doesnt randomly engage and disengage, it doesnt bind up suspension, its strong and does not need clutches replaced because of it being gear driven, the cons to a true trac are that you dont have both the tires going the same speed and it doesnt positively lock both axles together. with the detroit locker it does lock both axles together causing both axles to spin at the same speed and it is extremely strong, the bad side of the detroit is that it has horrible street manners, it will randomly engage and disengage which will sound like a loud bang and may jerk you around a bit, it will wear tires faster and bark them on tight turns in parking lots. i have ran both in daily drivers that i beat on. the true trac is positive enough to twist off a 2" .120 wall driveline with one axle already broken. but all this talk is just my .02 what the hell do i know about carburetors;) hope this helps
RampRat 12-30-2007, 04:16 PM I've got a Detroit locker in the 97 F250 and like it, but it can be a real pain in the butt on the street.
Every now and again it feels like a VW slammed into us from the rear & it's only the locker locking up.
On snow/ice it's also fun as the rear end slides all over the place really bad, but when I'm in 4x4 mode it's great.

The detroit has horrible street manners? You must be kidding right? Go with the Detroit Locker you won't be disappointed.

I want something that will not break( LOCKER) lol I can drive(steer) with the rear ! :D
urbanwheeler 01-02-2008, 04:55 AM no i was being serious, the manners of a locker arent terrible but they are very noticable. these definately dont go unnoticed. with a true trac you will still get sideways. they are both very strong especially with the size of a 10.25". if you want info from more guys with other hands on experience hit up the pirate board, www.pirate4x4.com/forum
hotstik 01-02-2008, 05:09 AM I love my Detroit Locker.

Oh I understand have driven jeeps and such that were locked up it was not to bad!
racehauler 01-02-2008, 01:06 PM Different people will have different oppinions about what is tollerable for street driving. That is obviously what is coming out in this thread.
You guys can not deny the fact that the Tru-Trac will be smoother and quieter during operation than a Detroit Locker. The Detroit Locker may still be tollerable for some people, but others would rather not hear or feel anything different than a typical open differential. They just want the added traction of a limited slip.
