I have had many cars and many trucks and have spent tons of $$$$ on sound equipment and I'll say this, It is very difficult to get really good sound out of the acustic's in a pickup truck. Maybe other's have had better luck but I have tried just about everything, and it has never been worth the money..

What head unit do you have? Brand? Watt's? What kind of music do you primarily listen to? The best place I have found is crutchfield..as far as price, and if you call them they will give you a reccomendation for your particular vehicle...Hope this helps...

haha thanks man, saw this last night and figured I would let it stew till the morning and let others chime in.

With many things it is almost nearly impossible to get your money's worth. The absolute ultimate key though isn't in spending the money on the gear, but spending the time on experimenting with placement and tuning to install the speakers for the environment. Not saying you never did cause I am sure you have, just don't wanna scare off others, many people have won SQ comps in trucks or placed very high, I know a few Dodges, and a few Ford's so its possible, but might require a bit more than the average person wants to do.

Perfect questions which will help greatly in figuring out some speakers to recommend. Crutchfield is great, I usually use them for research since they have tons of info on what they sell. I consider them to be a little pricey, however they are Authorized dealers of what they sell (which can be a big deal) and offer TONS of bonus items and tech support.

turbodiesel_02, depending on how you answer the above questions will influence what path you go down. Personally I stand by saying that if you are not going to use an Amp for the door speakers then you should simple stick to coaxials and not components. Even a cheap amp will absolutely shine over any HU both in amount of watts but mainly in CLEAN power.

If your already hunting ebay for audio then you might be interested in checking out Onlinecarstereo.Com - Wholesale Car Audio/Stereo Deals At Bargain Prices (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com) and Woofersetc.com the online car audio super store, the largest selection at the lowest prices! (http://www.woofersetc.com) as well as the above mentioned Crutchfield: LCD TV, Car Stereo, Home Theater, Speakers, Plasma TV (http://www.crutchfield.com) If you are interested in doing some of your own research on what is good then I would highly suggest checking out http://www.caraudio.com/forums (http://www.caraudio.com/forum/) (massive forum like PSN, 70,000+ members) and DIY Mobile Audio - Technical, Advanced & Informative (http://www.diymobileaudio.com) (large mainly SQ based forum)

Next I would recommend going with round speakers vs factory sized replacement. Oval speakers generally have more bass, simply due to increased cone area, but the sonics and accoustics of them are not as true as a round speaker, purely on the shape. I have 6-3/4" mids in my doors and they fit with no trimming of metal, just drill 4 new holes. Best way to do this and what I plan to do in the winter is to use a 1/2" or even better 3/4" (if it will fit) MDF baffle to mount the speaker to the door. This will deaden the door better by decoupling the speaker from the door metal (reducing vibrations and resonance in the door)

If you are going with componet speakers it will be very beneficial to actually audition the speakers. You can't get everything from hearing a speaker on a sound board, but the biggest is your personal preference of Hard vs soft tweeters. Many consider hard (metal dome) tweeters to be harsh, or bright, and some consider them more accurate. While soft dome (textile, silk usually) will be a bit mellower or more laid back, usually just as accurate I feel. So if you don't already have a preference on this I would suggest spending a bit of time auditioning them.

Ok, well if all that doesn't matter much and your looking just for some better tunes here are what I would personally consider in your price range.

This would be my top choice, its a bit over your $200 but might be found cheaper at other places. Pioneer Premier 6-3/4" components (http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_130TSD720C/Pioneer-Premier-TS-D720C.html?tp=106)

I also really like the Alpine Type-X ref set, but its $220 on woofersect.com and $400 on crutchfield

Of course there are more out there JL Audio makes good stuff and I wouldn't hesitate to run their stuff, Infinity makes some good sets as well (some feel their tweeters to be a bit bright though) Best of luck if ya narrow it down to some specific sets post em up and I or others can give you some more insight on them.

I recently slapped in 4 Polk Audio DB-571, still running them on the original HU, they're much clearer, they're a bit muddy in the low freqenzies but I've got that covered later on, atleast I hope so :)

With a tiny bit of convincing I could use the original screws aswell which I found to be a great plus...

I found those at amazon for like 58 bucks a pair, saw them on Crutchfield for like $99.

I've just gotta buy a Monoblock, build some crates and buy some more cables and I'm good to go on the rest of the stuff.. Then hopefully my alt won't kick the bucket before I can afford a new one :P

I just haven't seen much about the low-mid range Polk components which isn't necessarily a bad thing though. I actually have Polk components in my truck, the SR6500 kit, but run active instead of passive. I love them other than some slight install tweaks they require to achieve full potential. Polk makes some great stuff for both home and car audio so I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of their stuff.

Some like rear speakers, personally I recommend against it. It is hard to tell until you have tried it (I was skeptical at first) Think when you are at a concert or any live event the audio ALWAYS comes from in front of you and only in front of you. Speakers behind you when basically installed will only draw the audio image behind you, will be louder but will just distract your ears. I have run only front speakers in my crew cab for over 2 years now and have had no trouble filling the cab with audio. I would highly recommend taking whatever money you were planning on spending on rear speakers and putting them towards better fronts, or towards deadening/sealing your doors, or towards amplifing your front speakers.

I am running Alpine 5x7/6x8 components in my front doors and Alpine same size coaxials in the ext cab doors.
I have the fronts powered by amp and rears by HU

Unless you are just a car stereo nut almost anything aftermarket you put in will sound better than stock. There are alot of good sounding aftermarket mid's/high's that you can get for under 100 dollars. Your head unit should be putting out somewhere around 25 to 50 watts per channel, so dont go and get a high end speaker that will require 150 to 300 watts.
