Whats the best way to replace an oil pan gasket? Or is there only one way pull the motor.

They don't come with oil pan gaskets. I do believe you can get them but i'm just running the Ford rtv that is apparently specifically formulated for the 7.3 according to the tube. :ford: I put on a good bead of it and it hasn't leaked yet. I only got 30 miles on it though.

You might be able to drop the oil pan enough to scrape the old rtv out and put some new stuff in but that seems like it wouldn't be very fun. Doesn't take too long to pull it out.

No way in hades to clean the old "grey death" off with out the pan coming completely off the motor. Just pull it and do it right.

yep pull it out, also why your there might as well put new bearings in it and torque every thing down for insurance.. as well as a new rear main and any think else you would have to pull the motor to do. It only takes about a 4 or 5 hours to do and of coarse 3 or 4 to put it back in... good luck it is a pain in the butt

Any suggestions of where to get the best bearings and by any chance the torques on the pan, bearings, and rear main

Diesel Innovations (http://67.19.132.3/dieselinnovations/www/di.php?page=techinfo)

Theres a link in there for torque specifications. As for the gasket Id just use RTV like it came with cheaper and works just as good if not better believe me its a bastard to get the pan off with all the rtv they put on there!

Go to Ford or IH and get the stuff designed for use on the oil pan! Don't just use regular RTV, I would not trust it like the grey stuff ford sells.

Normally, I would say use RTV, but with having to pull the motor, turn it upside down I would use the Ford gray RTV.

Why waste an entire hard weekend to try and save a couple bucks.

Yeah sorry I didnt imply the use of the grey rtv like ford and internations sells though it was implied as thats what was used OEM.

Use fords or IH gray RV designed for the oil pan and keep the pan facing up for 12-24hrs for it to cure.

If you want its up to you but a good bead on the pan should be enough

This oil leak is starting to become a pain in my a$$. Its coming right down or from some where between the motor and fly wheel i thought it was the pan gasket and i took the sheilds off and it looked like it was coming from the rear main. But you can't really see any thing seeping out. There is oil sitting on top of the motor in the valley. And i can't see if its coming from the top of the motor. Its a really bad leak when you start the truck and let it idle it don't leak or when it sits but if you go drive it oil from some comes out the fly wheel cover and blows all over the bottom of my truck. Any ideas

The reason why it leaks down and comes out the flywheel cover is because in the back of the valley there is a hole from the factory that allows it to leak down through there. I would clean the top of the valley VERY well, and literally towel dry it, then start it, have some clean white rags in the valley and see if you can see where the oil is coming from.

If you can't see oil getting on the rag anywhere, it could be turbo pedistal o-rings. I would replace the turbo pedistal o-rings and see if that helps, since it is relatively cheap to replace.

Common places that cause a lake in the valley.

1. HPOP lines or HPOP itself.
2. Turbo pedistal o-rings.

They are all easy fixes, Guzzle (there is a link to his website in the Library) sells o-rings at a really good price.
