Short Bus 07-21-2009, 12:59 AM I have a german shepard and will never have anything else. Callie is my first GS and is an awesome dog. She's protective in the house and truck but if you get her out among people she's calm, friendly and great with kids. About the only thing that sets her off is other dogs that she doesnt know, she's VERY territorial. In fact i just took her on vacation and had her out at many tourist traps around CO in the rockies w/o any problems.

DieselRangerKid 07-21-2009, 02:11 AM I've owned 3 rottweilers and as userma3648 said the more aggressive breeds can be great pets. All 3 of mine have been great pets. In fact my current rottie and my 5 year old daughter are best friends and have been for the past 4 years. She is way gentle with all people. Anyway good luck with whatever you decide.
01platinum 07-21-2009, 02:19 AM I had my Weinmerianer in Florida when I lived in an apartment. Buddy has a english bulldog and I have heard they are great for apartments. He doesn't have time for her so my wife and i are thinking of taking her in.

God No. Not a Weimaraner in an apartment or small house, unless you want to replace, the carpet, trim, cabinets, take them for 2 hour walks, give them training. They need a job, hunting, agility, flyball, or something. If they don't have a job, they will distroy everything. This is why there are thousands in shelters and up for adoption. They are very energetic and people think they are such pretty dogs without understanding the breed, then they can't handle them and ship them off. You don't know me, but trust me on this one. LOL

yamt03 07-21-2009, 02:00 PM We just got a French Bulldog and he's a pretty good dog. His name is Scout and he won't get big maybe 20-25 lbs. And since your newly single he is a chick magnet when we walk him. The only down side is that he is a walking bag of ass gas. That little dog can clear a room out,but so far thats the only complaint against him.

A lot of cities will not tag them, some insurance companies will not give you homeowners or renters insurance if you own them. A lot of pounds will not even call you if they pick them up, just held for three days and put to sleep.
Some cities have even outlawed them.

What kind of dog do you breed?
Arisley 07-22-2009, 04:03 AM I don't breed. I have a really good friend that breeds GSD, and Standard Poodles. Her husband breeds Labs and German Shorthairs. Together they breed Labradoodles.
Her GSD's start at 5K apiece, she has a waiting list on them over a year long, paid in advance, sight unseen.
Her standard Poodles go for 2 to 5K.
He doesn't actually breed, he buys Labs for 20 bucks from people that thought that Labs were cute puppies. Trains them and takes about 10 to 15 with him up North to hunt, comes back with no dogs and a pocket full of money. He does breed the shorthairs though.
They make a lot of money on Labradoddles, sell them all day every day for 6 to 8 hundred each.
They do not breed a female until she is two years old and passes OFA. They only breed until they are 5, and then adopt the breeders out to somebody with a limited registration and no papers until proof of spay or neuter.

good deal! my soon to be wife took our dogs to some test to see if the can breed! but they came back great so when my female turns 2 I guess breeding starts!
but most of my buddys breed and show pits so we are learning and going to start showing soon!
01excursion7.3 07-22-2009, 05:43 AM Pits are great dogs as long as they have responsible owners. Check out pbrc.net and learn more about the breed. It will also help you in knowing if they are right for you. And the best part is, if you decide on one, you can find one through that site that has been rescued.

I agree with you. I use to work at out local animal shelter for 9 1/2 years and I saw alot of pits come threw there, probley thousands of them and I can count on one hand and 4 fingers left over of all the "dangerous" pits I've delt with. Now this one was a bad mother. Now the one that NOBODY thinks about, and surpasses the rep of a pit is a worthless chow/ chow mix breeds hands down. When I use to get dispatched to the hospitals for dog bites, there was a Dr. there that me and him would guess, even before we saw the victom that is would be a chow/chow mix. And 99.9% of the time me were right.

that could be true.. but thats why you get full bred pits... both of mine are and they were not cheap... i have paper work on them that show their family tree was..... but i can see your point.. and like you said this could be true with all species of dogs.. we just never know... but you do hear more cases of kids getting bit or hurt with other dogs...

01excursion7.3 07-22-2009, 10:12 PM damn that's a damn good lookin dog.
Thanks. He's not papered or anything, but he's definitely a fine example of a beautiful well behaved pit. He only barks on command, (voice and hand signal) and has only been on a leash to go into stores and dog parks. 100% voice command, and listens 95% of the time. :pointlaugh:
The girls at petsmart never want to give him back when he gets groomed.
I put more value in the temperament tests (Such as they explain on pbrc) than papers. Plus, Momma was onsite, and I knew the father. So it was really a easy choice. With his temperament, I want to breed him once before I snip him, I'm just to picky on who he gets bred with, and where the pups go. Plenty of people that want to breed with him, just not the type of people, or a quality choice for the female.

if you baby them like i do mine they are very calm dogs.... but make sure to get him fixed.. that makes a huge diff in these dogs.... at night our dogs stay inside the house and they will just go into a corner and sleep... the white one goes in front of my daughters bedroom door or next to her bed which is very cute....
price depends on how full bred you want him... my white one was 1500 bucks.. and the brown one was 900ish... expensive but i know where they came from and none of his relatives were fighting dogs...
hope that helps bud.. good luck on your search

blackwaterstroker 07-22-2009, 10:51 PM Woooo lots of money...thanks Raul
01excursion7.3 07-22-2009, 10:52 PM Expensive is a relative term when it comes to pits. Depends on what you want, how pure the bloodline, and what strain of pit you want.
Blues are typically really expensive. (But I still want one) $1000 plus, I've seen them for $2500.
I bought my boy for $300 when he was 4 months old.
You can adopt a rescued one in the range from $100 to I've seen the adoption fee as high as $500.
You can find them advertised from $200 to $500 for normal bloodlines, or just plain mixes.
I personally lean towards rednose and blues. I don't care for black muzzles.
The MOST important thing to do when considering a APBT, AMstaff, and bull, is read Pit Bull Rescue Central (http://www.PBRC.net) They have lots of reading, and will steer you towards what you want to know, and how to judge one of these great ones yourself. 90% of the time any dog in a rescue has been through temperament testing to make sure they can be rehomed, it's the 10% that you have to know what to look for.
BTW, any pit will absolutely LOVE to go for rides, and will most likely love to ride shotgun. My boy is a housedog, no kennel or tie out for him. Treat him like a kid, love him, and they will be your best friend forever.
They say a male will better attach to a female person, and a female will better attach to a male person. Most of the time this is the case, but my boy listens better to me.

Bruno2 07-23-2009, 04:03 AM I really dont hold any biases towards breeds of dogs . I have several friends with pits and they have never hurt anybody that I know of . However the only dog that I have ever been bitten by was a pit . There is a lot of judgement passed by the public whenever you are seen coming down the road with a pit bull . Whenever trouble arises and a pit is involved it will be impossible to convince anyone that it wasnt the dogs fault and that usually involves a civil lawsuit against the owner . If this thread goes on for another two years you will probably not read a post where somebody says the only way I would take a lab or a pointer or a labradoodle is if I could shoot it . You would be surprised at how many people have that attitude towards pit bulls . So dont be shocked if you find that you are being villianized for owning one especially in an apartment complex .
01excursion7.3 07-23-2009, 04:26 AM I was bit in the face when I was a kid, and it was a stupid wiener dog. Probably why I don't like little dogs.
The part that the general public doesn't realize, is that the media and the people involved in most of the cases of dog attacks, aren't breed experts. Did you know that the "Pitbull" isn't actually a breed, just a predefined set of characteristics. Probably better that 50% of the dogs that are labeled as pitbull mixes aren't pits at all. They just meet some of the characteristics, and a vet slaps the label on it.
When we ride together, and he has his head out the window held high, he is one proud and confident MF'er. I'm never embarrassed to be seen with him And you can usually hear lots of praise from open windows of other cars. There is no mistaking what my boy is, and I have no regrets on having him.
Though when I check into a motel room the counter person is told he's a Lab. LOL

amarillo250 07-23-2009, 02:19 PM let me just say that in general Pit's are real nice dogs. Never mind the bad pr. they get, but a Pit is not a dog you want to put in the hands of a beginner who never hat to deal or work with dogs.
Pitbulls are not beginner dogs, you all know about the power and strenght they have, this is a dog who can be loving if handelt good, but you have to know what your doing.
I was dog trainer in germany with my rottweiler and worked with the K9 units and have seen some good and some bad ones, so please make sure you know what your doing, for the sake of the dog. Pits are nice and loyal if you know how to handle.

:whs: I agree, and thats why I always refer people to Pit Bull Rescue Central (http://www.pbrc.net) to learn about the breed before they just go get one, plenty of good reading, and warnings to educate people. If after they read everything there, and they still want one, then they're making an educated choice, and not just blind free will because they like the way they look.

Well thanks for keeping it clean. People like me can like or dislike any breed I choose to for any reason I think pitbulls are one of the ugliest dogs out there, I am aware that there are good pitbulls I just simply dont like them. There are several breads I dont like for a variety of reasons.
I own mules and horses and just like dogs there are good ones and bad ones, there are some mules that I have owned that came down with led poisening due to there dangerous nature and there are others that are worth everything to me because I can trust them in any situation. People judge mules just like pits so I understand where your coming from, i just dont like them nothing personal.

Boxers are actually one of the few breeds I'd consider. Only problem with them, is that they are super hyper when young, but they usually grow out of that. I've definitely seen some beautiful boxers.
I also like bull terriers, but the wife thinks they're ugly. There's just something about them that makes me want one. LOL

Bruno2 07-23-2009, 10:13 PM A boxer will destroy your house when they are young and left alone ( seperation anxiety ) it takes about two years for one to start to mature its way out of it. I have a female and she is a big girl about 100-105 lbs they are a very unique breed . I have had a ton of fun with her over the years , but , I can never get cleared out of my head the way she was when she was a baby . I must have bought 30 pairs of sandles and flip flops , She destroyed ( dont take the word destroyed as a figure of speech ) a really nice couch several library books a few thousand dollars worth of king size comforters and the list goes on and on . These dogs are very" labor intensive ".
powerstrokeracing 07-23-2009, 10:18 PM another vote for German Shepards, we did have 4 of them but one died 2 days ago at 16 yrs old. but they are great dogs, listen very well, protectove, everything about them is great!
bbbxcursion 07-24-2009, 03:19 AM I have 2 pure bred boxers that I've had since they were puppies. I never had a problem with them destroying stuff when left alone. They have SO much energy as puppies but it's easy to deal with IMO. 1 male and 1 female. I disagree with the separation anxiety statement with boxers. Any dog can have that.
Bruno2 07-24-2009, 03:29 AM 2 might be the reason why .

google it . I have talked to too many owners of boxers and that seems to be the standard .
bbbxcursion 07-24-2009, 03:43 AM I had the 1st for a year before I got the 2nd one. This is just my experience though, sorry your dog messed up all your stuff. I had a lab do that once. I guess all labs do it.
Bruno2 07-24-2009, 05:53 AM Once you get a boxer you'll never go back.
This could probably be a very true statement !!!
My parents have set of boxers they are saying the same thing .
I am going to try the South African Boerbel next . ( if the old lady will let me have something other than a Boxer)
Their male(Bueford) tore the ass off of their house until they got the female .
He committed one of the funniest acts of destruction I have ever seen . He got a 10lb bag of rice out of the pantry when they were at work . He must have really hated it too . He must have been shaking it as violently as a bag rice could be shook . That was 5 yrs ago and if you look hard enough there is still rice to be found in the house to this day .
I think the boxer is one of the best looking breeds that there is .
Arisley 07-24-2009, 10:02 AM My Labradoodle will unzip pillows and empty them. She will get one of my shoes out of the closet. She has to open the door to do this, take her a while. Grab a shoe, carry it into the living room and remove the shoe lace. Nothing destroyed, just things to keep her busy.
bbbxcursion 07-24-2009, 02:16 PM My female boxer wil do busy stuff like that but she won't hurt anything. She just keeps it in her mouth.

imelmo 07-24-2009, 07:37 PM What in the world is the difference between those and a pit bull? Looks exactly the same to my untrained eye.
SevenThree 07-24-2009, 07:53 PM the staffie is a bit smaller, same genetic background and is AKC recognized unlike the APBT.
I dont think either one is a beginners dog IMO.

idahostroker 07-24-2009, 08:18 PM amstaffs are actually built better than pit bulls (more muscular with a bigger head)in my opinion they in general have a better temperment than pit bulls and are considered higher class. My male diesel is awsome with my 4 year old and 3 year old and all the nieborhood kids. They are short hair low maintanance and they like hanging out beeing lazy as much as they like going full boar outside playing.American Staffordshire Terrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Staffordshire_Terrier) here is the difference between the two
KingDiesel 07-24-2009, 08:23 PM Boxers are awsome, but yes Like else mentioned they are very hyper, but they love people, they have severe ADD lol. My aunt and uncles dog loves me to death whenever he sees me he jumps all over me etc. and the best thing about the dog is he"ll protect anyone in the family. if me and my uncle are play fighting he"ll jump in if I take a shot at him or he takes a shot at me first. he's great.
