castle rock, i never owned a diesel before the navy. and i did with every car i ever had before. i was reading the state law and it says that light duty diesels are subject to emissions test. i dont know if that applies to my truck.

You can pass with stacks. Now if your truck was originally equipped with a cat, and it's gone, then they will fail you on a visual test. I'm pretty sure your truck had a cat. If it's gone, you'll need to find a way to retrofit it back on there.

As for tuning, as long as you have a stock tune (or something close to stock with your injectors), you should be fine. It's a simple opacity test, so they don't care how big your injectors are, just as long as you don't blow too much smoke.

And living in Castle Rock does mean you are subject to diesel emissions testing. There's a testing center right there in town. A few guys I know go to that station, and the operators are cool about stacks, mods, etc. However, they do have to follow the law, so make sure your truck has a cat, and runs fairly smoke free in a lower hp tune.

On a side note, come back safely, and thanks for serving our country. I only live 15 minutes from Castle Rock. If you need anything, let me know.

You can pass without mufflers. It's just the emissions equipment that they are concerned with.

so a hollowed out cat would pass a visual inspection if that's all it is, right? I still have Idaho plates, and am curious as to what they'll say about my '72 powerstroke when the tags expire and I have to get colorado ones.

the hollowed out cat is what i was thinking, but i have a factory cat but i have 4" exhaust do you think putting the hollowed out stock cat will make it sound funny? smoker should get classic plates and you never need another test again but you do need to pass emissions before you can get them, after that your golden

I recently moved from Castle Rock. I can tell you that passing inspections is not a problem. The opacity isn't a problem with anything near a stock tune. I have had my truck tested with a single stack and with duals - and was no problem. The last emissions test was in a "tow" type tune and passed with no problems. The shop in Castle Rock is a little oblivious when it comes to Powerstrokes, nice enough guys, just not high on the fords. They are big on Banks stuff, if that tells you something.

Unfortunately for us in Colorado, emissions testing has been around for a while, and started up back when we were a republican state.

I don't think his truck came with a cat to begin with. They look up the vin number to see if it was equipped from the factory with a cat. And he lives closer to Denver now.

You're lucky they don't do testing out in Grand Junction.

Emissions testing for gas vehicles is $25 every 2 years. For diesels, it's $65-$80 every single year.

What's really sad about that, is a gasser emissions testing is more comprehensive. It includes an OBD-II scan, gas cap check, and a very long emissions test on the rollers at many different speeds, acceleration rates, and deceleration.

For diesels, it's just a very quick opacity test at 3 speeds. Sometimes they do a snap test, sometimes they don't.

Diesel owners get ripped in this deal.

hey genie did you have your cats on when you got inspected? and why in the hell you would want to leave? The truck has a hollow cat on it right now, purchased it that way. For the next inspection, I am going to remove it and see what they say. If I can get by without it, I would like to. I moved closer to my job. My daughter was born just over a month ago and so the 1-3 hour commute had to go. I love Castle Rock, it is my second favorite city behind Ft Collins. But it is very nice being able to bike to work in 10 minutes.

As far as your truck and a cat passing emissions. You can always get a pipe and swap the cat once a year. Or, leave it off and see if they catch it. You get 1 free re-test (I think), so if it fails just go throw it on and go back the next day. The emissions test isn't bad at all.

There are a few people running around with cats that have the outlets stretched so they fit right over a 4" pipe.

We don't have emissions where we live either.

Course we live in Weld County, outside of any city limits.
Thank goodness.
