double trailers?

Any body know?
Can I tow a piece of equipment behind a trailer?
Example is a wood chipper behind a 7'x12' 9990lb rated tandem axle dump trailer?
So, it's not a true 2 trailer set up.

In NY state equipment like chippers, splitters, mills, mixers etc.. are not considered "trailers" so long as there are not extras on them like a tool box filled with tools not for the piece of equipment. They do not have to have lights or plates.

I dont know about your laws but I would pull it in a heart beat. Alot of times we pull our squeeze chute behind our stock trailers all over the place and they dont have any lights or tags. But ours is considered farm use though.

I have been thinking about getting my land classified as a tree farm.

Local farmers do drive/tow some crazy rigs around here.

I would think a call to the local or state police HQ would get ya an answer pretty quickly. I am pretty sure its a total no-no here in MA and would get ya written up pretty quickly.

I've been told you can get a different answer from each trooper. Besides they are not regularly friendly to talk on the phone with.

I'm looking for nys transportation laws/rules/regs. Whatever I can find to answer this. Even if I can tow like this, I would still be nervous of getting pulled over and ticketed/harassed. I want to be armed with the proof I could do it.

I don't know about the troopers around here, an electric car got pulled over and the owner got harassed pretty good. The trooper was telling him he couldn't drive a golf car on the road, untill he realized it was registered and legit. Another trooper was mistaking a dead fawn in the road for a dog, he was trying to find the owner. The guy who hit the deer was going alone for the joke as he found it very amusing. Trooper was from the city.

haha, yea sounds very typical. Sadly seems like ya could/would get hassled for anything these days.

Best of luck I hope ya can find the regs somewhere.

You can in Utah. Last time I checked you could even pull another behind a tongue tow travel trailer. That is here in Utah, most states require a 5th wheel. There is also a length requirement of 65' (or maybe 75').

i know here in michigan you need a special endorsment to pull a 5'er with a boat in tow behind that, but for some small trailer like a chipper? or mixer? hell i say go for it.

In michigan the first trailer has to be a fifth wheel/gooseneck, and if its for recreation you can pull your fifth wheel and boat. If its commercial you have to have a doubles/triples endorsement on your class A CDL

Personally I'd say eff it, if you don't have a CDL or any involvment with the DOT theres always I didn't know, and its not a "Trailer". I guess it just depends on what a douche the officer is.

Don't know about other states but here in Az you can pull doubles as long as the front one is a 5th wheel. NO pulling 2 tongue pulls. And 65' max length. No cdl if it's recreational and under 26,000lb GVW
