I think the 6.4s are pretty stout. I dont have one, but BigRPower's truck is pretty fast for the work he has done. And I know you said that you wanted a tow truck, but I think if it can handle 550 hp, it can tow about anything you would want it to.

mick has a 6.4 with the 210 spartan tune.
i spoke to him the other day and he pulled 20,000+lb goosneck and he was pretty happy...

I've had them both and the 6.4 with the emissions crap off is my motor of choice. It will pull anything and waaaaay more power. Same mpg. Better trans. Nicer ride. Unreal interior.

I still have both, the 7.3 is cool but even with tons of stuff done to it the 6.4 has more power hands done. You have to do so much to a 7.3 to get to 550hp and over 1000 ft lbs that the trcuk won't be a very good daily driver. The new 6.4 Makes that kind of power on programming,DPF/CAT pipe, and air ntake. My F450 tows 12K and up on the 275 Spartan tune with no issues. Most people are even running this programming of a stock tranny with no issues. I love my 01 F350 7.3 which has about 30,000 mile, and I would new sell it but it just doesn't compare to the new 6.4's power, handling or interior.

Like above posted, without the DPF and get the tuner, 6.4 rocks. I can't take anything away from the 7.3, great motor, very reliable. But if I had to go out and buy one right now, I would buy the 6.4. Keep a little cash on the side for the tuner and delete system. :ford:

Im a die hard 7.3 guy. i have alot of time and money invested in making mine fast, and some of you with a few mods will give a good run on the highway, and, youre trucks are so much more streetable its unreal. If i was given the offer for a 6.4, i'd have to do it.

but siriously if your into the whole is the couple hundred extra hp worth the 15 to 30 extrak thousand dollars your gonna spend? I know my truck worth about 10 to 15k with 360 hp very nice inside and out is what im keepin cause i dont want to spend 20 extra thousand dollars for the 6.4. But you know how it is in about 5 years ill probly pick up a 6.4 for 10 to 15 thousand and you folks will be buying the next new thing. Just a difference in paychecks i guess

Waiting for them to fall in price is a good idea, but it would be nice to have a truck that is still under the powertrian warranty...

My dad's 6.4 has been in 3 times in 25,000 miles. First was at 500 miles! It went into limp home, turns out it had a cracked fuel rail! Second was another high pressure fuel leak, caused by the tech that fixed the first:doh: Third was for leaking coolant, they had to replace the radiator. Must have been the same tech because a day later one of the intake boots blew off at about 38 psi:doh::doh::doh:

All around great truck, just gotta expect some issues when you buy a job 1!

Got to go with the 6.4. No question. I have a pair of 7.3's(Exc and PU), my buddy has a Seriously nice 02, but they just don't compare to the 08. And not just the motor.

My 99 has ran th gammut for motor and power all the way up to 500hp before I split the block:(. And t took me three motors to get to that point. Towing, even stock was just OK. Could do it easily enough, but I could never quite relax while toing the Desert Fox. Same for the Exc. So while I was rebilding my motor for the 4th time,( this time with O-Ring heads, main girdle, crowers, custom mahle's, and the list goes on) I went out and bought an 08. There is NOTHING it doesn't do better than any of the other trucks. The interior is just phenominal(even after a year), No matter what is hooked behind it the drive is a one finger ride. Literally forget the trailer is there. The ride is much better, the cabin is Cadillac quiet, and I have never had it to the dealer for anything in the first 25,000 miles.

Lets just say i like it so much that I am considerig selling my 7.3 enigne that i Have over $25k into and never used just because there is no point now. My 7.3 will barely have more power than the 6.4 with a chip, and still not be half the truck the 08 is. And I even did the D60 coil spring conversion to my 99.

To sum it up, If you are buying a truck, and know you will want some power, and tow with it, no amount of money will make a 7.3 era truck match the maturity of the 08. However if all you need is a reliable tough as nails truck to get you where you need to go, and last forever, while hauling loads- you won't beat any year 7.3 SuperDuty. :ford:

The 6.4 is a nice motor when its running. I would personally stick with a 7.3 in my opinion. I drive one everyday for work and average about 220-250 miles a day. Fuel millage could be better and we have had a lot of problems with mine and the other one we have. Hoods cracking, radaitors leaking, and turbo problems.... I also used my buddies last year to pull the pulling truck around with and he has had the same problems... Granet all 3 of these trucks Im talking about all do have over 100,000 miles on the already. I know my buddy is getting ready to trade his in for a dmax I think. hes fed up with the way ford has treated him with the problems he has had. He has had 3 radatiors in it and ford wont warrenty them anymore... even after they had a recall on exsesive presure building up on these trucks. some kind of bypass kit the dealer had to install.. IDK kinda messed up. I know if you take all the bs off there are a few guys like bigrs truck that are a real strong running truck for sure!! very impressive I just would prefer the reliabilty of an old 7.3 Just my 2 cents
