jaybuller 03-10-2009, 10:41 PM ALRIGHT LETS SAY I GET A TOP OF THE LINE BD RACE 4R100 THEN GO WITH A 12V CUMMINS(I CAN GET A STOCK ONE WITH 150,000 MILES ONIT. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO IT TO GET IT ROLLIN FAST? LIKE 11S FAST IN A 7200 POUND 4X4. I JUST CANT DEAL WITH MY TRUCK ONLY RUNNIN IN THE 14S I THINK ILL KEEP MY TRUCK THE WAY IT IS AND BUILD A RACE TRUCK THAT IS JUST LIKE MINE SEPT NO MOTOR OR TRANNY. MY QUESTION IS SINCE IVE NEVER MESSED WITH 12V'S IVE JUST HEARD THEY ARE A LOT CHEAPER TO MAKE A LOT OF HP. LET ME KNOW IF SOME OF YOU GUYS DONE IT.
BFD99 03-10-2009, 11:04 PM ahh caps!!!! its so hard to read! screw the BD tranny and go with a BTS. ship said 12v motor with a big pile of money to scheids diesel and send the chassis out to get a cage built.
Marty 03-10-2009, 11:09 PM Your sig says your out of money, you should not be thinking of doing this.
Powersmoker 03-10-2009, 11:17 PM It doens't matter what brand of diesel you have, its going to cost a lot of money to run 11's
theSLEEPER 03-10-2009, 11:17 PM I told you you wouldn't get answers if you didn't work on your typing...
jaybuller 03-10-2009, 11:24 PM dang it i forgot about the all caps stuff, alright so is it not any cheaper to build a 12v cummins to 800hp than it is to build a 7.3 to 800hp? i mean a lot cheaper not just a little cheaper. im also not agianst using nitrous to get there i just thought it was a lot cheaper to build a cummins than a ford. mabey a 500hp cummins with a lot of spray as long as the 12v can handle it. as far as out of money im talkin out of money right now. i can always get another job or sell stuff to get what i want it just seems like if i keep spending all this money on the 7.3 i wont get anywhere i want to be unless i was a millionare!
theSLEEPER 03-10-2009, 11:26 PM This is alot of work... but obviously you're not paying attention... This is the way your posts SHOULD look. But they should ALSO make a little bit of sense...
I tried the best I could...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, let's say I get a top of the line BD Race 4R100, and then go with a 12 valve Cummings (I can get a stock one with 150,000 miles on it).
What do I need to do to it to get it rolling fast?? Like, 11's fast, in a 7200 pound 4x4. I just can't deal with my truck only running in the 14's.
I think I'll just keep my truck the way it is and build a race truck that is just like mine, except a DIFFERENT motor and a built trans.
My question is...
Since I've never messed with 12 valves, I just heard they are a lot cheaper to make a lot of hp.
Will some of you guys that have done it let me know how, and what was involved?
theSLEEPER 03-10-2009, 11:28 PM Don't do a cummings swap to get 500hp...
Don't do a cummings swap at all....
jaybuller 03-10-2009, 11:28 PM Alright there whats with the all caps on some words and some words not all caps?
theSLEEPER 03-10-2009, 11:29 PM That's me YELLING!!
jaybuller 03-10-2009, 11:40 PM Hahah i see know. i would build my 7.3 to 500hp but then i couldnt very well spray it with a lot of nitrous on top of the 500 without payin big money for billit rods mainstuds/girtel way better heads with different valve springs filling the block, head studs new expensive sticks and a big turbo. i could easly put 10 or 15,000 into this 7.3 to make it stout enough to handle all that power and even then i dont know if i could say it wont come apart. That is why i woundered about the cummins 12v and what it could handle. Thanks for explaining the typing though!
theSLEEPER 03-10-2009, 11:45 PM Just buy a Dodge... much cheaper in the long run...
jaybuller 03-10-2009, 11:50 PM I realy cant stand them that why i wouldnt build one. I have to look at it everytime i get in it so im not gonna drive it. I love the way the f250s look and feel on the inside just want to be able to run 11s in one and i just dont see it happinen with a 7.3 reliably and without 15K. mabey i should just scrap the whole "drag race a deisel truck" thing and stick with the sbc's im used too. This deisel drag race thing might just be for the rich folks.
smorris 03-10-2009, 11:52 PM Alright there whats with the all caps on some words and some words not all caps?
Ummm, it puts more emphasis on those words.
BTW--:whs:
If you only want 500 hp, do not put in a cummins. It will cost you more to swap it out than what it will cost for the parts on a 7.3 to make 500hp. There are several PROVEN setups to get you to 500hp on a 7.3.
If you want to go into the 11 second quarter mile range, then get another job. Get TWO more jobs. It aint gonna be cheap , no matter what route you go.
Besides, if you ever drive an actual 500 hp 7.3 , I think you'll be plenty happy with that for a pretty good while.
Either route you go, you're gonna need a good transmission. (BTS)
For the 7.3, your gonna need a decent set of injectors, a good turbo, probably a fuel system, exhaust if you dont already have one, head studs, and I would recommend a studded and girdled bottome end, unless you want to be doing it over again in a year when the block cracks.
For the cummins, just to get it running, your gonna need $$$$$. Adaptors, wiring, the know how to do it, or more $$$$ to pay to have it done, a lot of downtime while swapping, and good place to do the work.
Not to mention you that s just for the stock cummins. To make it run your gonna need more of those $$$$ for goodies. Fuel upgrades, and turbo upgrades along with new exhaust, plumbing for the fuel system, and oh, did I mention $$$$$$$.??
I guess you could go common rail cummins, and save some of those $$$ on goodies, and just tune it. But then the initial cost is gonna be higher for the engien to begin with.
Call one of the several vendors on here for a price on a swap.
jaybuller 03-10-2009, 11:59 PM Alright smorris , how does the nitrous affect your 7.3? have you been using it for a while? Does a CR with tuning alone hit 500hp?I think you guys are right though on the money. I do need to just rethink this deisel drag racing and go back to gas in a light car. Its so much easier and cheaper. Hell i had a 1982 s10 with a 355 and a th350 auto in it that i built for less than 5000 dollars and with a little spray i hit 10.02 at 131. I guess thats more my price range anyways. Thanks for all the input.

I guess thats more my price range anyways. Thanks for all the input. With my old motor the nitrous was a blast! But, it was a bone stock 180,000 mile motor with no head studs, no nothing. Just a set of 238 cc a codes, a modded H2E, exhaust, stock fuel system, gauges, and not much else.
It would run a mid eight second eight mile at around 81 mph on the bottle. I think thats around a 13.4 quarter mile or so. Never ran 1/4, so guess I'll never know. ---on edit-- I also had swamps gen hpop.---- oops :D
Now its a shade faster, but fuel only, on a built motor.
Still looking for more. :evil.
Heavy truck too-- 8,300 pounds at the time.
But, there are a couple of guys on here running 12 seconds or so on stock motors, with head studs only.
fuel stuff, and turbos.

from what i've heard it takes around $9k just to do the swap, counting buying the engine and adapters and all that... but then you can sell back the old engine and stuff to get a little money back...
but anyway... to get a 12v to 500hp, ALL the 12v injection pumps can support 500hp easily... so fuel system upgrade are not needed, you just need new DVs and all that crap that i have no idea about, you can get a set of marine injectors for $600-800, they're smokey but they can support 650-700hp..
the turbos on those stock 12v cummins SUCK!!! they can't support a crap's worth of hp... gonna need to upgrade that too!!! but that's pretty cheap for a cummins too!!! can get a new one for like $800.. and a used for really cheap!!
then you just gotta get a BTS trans for $4300 and you're basically set...
so the money into the engine for mods AFTER the swap is around $2000... much cheaper then the $5500 i have into my truck to get to 420hp...
sniperonhigh 03-11-2009, 06:35 PM Just send me a check for 25K and come get your truck, problem solved :D
B18B1LS1 03-19-2009, 10:27 PM Maybe post this on a DODGE forum where people know what they are talking about :ford:
old man dave 03-20-2009, 06:56 AM Either TDR or CompetitionDiesel
glasseater 03-20-2009, 12:20 PM Either TDR or CompetitionDiesel
yes go to compD, not TDR, i've heard too many bad things about that forum
