 Hey, working on my uncle's 84 6.9L. Anyone had sparks flying from the selanoid down on the starter?
that's our problem and just wondering if we should try to replace the selanoid or just do the whole starter? My uncle is disabled and on a very tight budget so we were gonna try the selanoid, but if he needs the starter, then we're out that money cause the starter comes with the selaniod... grr... I hate electrical crap. :poke:

Sounds to me like the connection is loose or corroded causing it to arc. Take it off and clean it and tighten it up. Spray some battery terminal juice on it.

Well, the terminal was loose, so I tightened it up, still arced. Could be dirty, the wire comes out of the starter and to the selanoid... I think it's a ground?? anyway, I'll try the cleaning and juice tomorrow and see what's going on then. THANKS!

Take a wire brush, or if you are lazy like me, a 4'' grinder with a wire wheel on it. That will clean all the corrosion off the lead and the soleniod post. I forget the name of that terminal coating, but it is red and prevents terminals from corroding very well.

If it was loose I would bet thats what it is.

I would take it in and see about getting it bench tested and rebuilt.. Cheaper tahn a new one, but works the same..its how i do all my starters & alternators
