I used Krylon fusion....
http://powerstrokenation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20142

It works AWESOME! I just made sure there was no dressing, wax, or anything like that by wiping with some degreaser and alcohol... Then sprayed it in a few light coats... My wife puts her feet on the airbag cover and I've had the dash on and off a bunch... NEVER cracked, chipped or ANYTHING. I love it... now if someone would just give me some feedback on what else they would paint...

I painted my gauge pod with the proper color paint in a spray can...from your friendly ford dealer. Note which color you need (generally the interior has two colors), stop by the parts counter at your dealer and ask for it...about 15 bux, as I recall.

BTW. I left the texture, but I have no doubt that if you sanded it all smooth and painted it would work just as well!

Mines already smoothed out J, i've got the woodgrain pieces I want to paint black, so I just need to scuff them and degrease then hit them with a few coats...btw yours looks good!

Thanks man! I might try smoothing my doors when I do them...
But yeah... Light scuff with a real fine grit, make sure they're clean and be patient and do light coats! I've read a lot of reviews and you really can't hurt this stuff!

What color you going with?

Is your wood grain aftermarket on the dash? I did some cutting to mine and had to do some cleaning up on it but still thinking of painting it. Didn't take too much of light wet sanding to get through the clear coat on the finish, actually went through the wood grain on a small spot  but its hard to notice. I would love to see how yours comes out since I have been thinking of sanding and painting all the wood grain in my truck to a black or similar.

Not sure the rest of your dash but you should be able to get any SEM products in the right color from www.eastwood.com I used a grey from them to paint a small fiberglass pod and after finishing the paint seems to match my dash perfectly, I have had many people say that the pod looks totally stock.

Oh I know, I was just suggesting the SEM products as good paints, and if he needed they got all other colors too. Actually I think just about anything will work though lol, I think I used Eastwood Chassis black for the small spots I did in black, was just what I had around lol.

Did you use the same Krylon on the airbag panel? Looks pretty good, I like the whole grey/black interior style. Honestly I think what you have painted is just right IMO, maybe just the door inserts up above the arm rest and some seat inserts and that would probably finish it off.

Yup! It's Krylon on both. I've currently got the glove box out and smoothing it. Gonna paint it all except the handle. Should look good. I'll take lots of pics!!!

First I was thinking that might be too much but I suppose if done right should look good, your gonna have to finish the rest of the interior up now too then lol. Smoothed out should look pretty sweet with a nice gloss finish. Are you gonna do any to the doors too, like the inserts up above the arm rest and such?

I'm planning on it... I'm probably gonna do all I can without it looking too goofy.
At first it was gonna just be an "accent" thing, but may turn into more like a two-tone color thing...

What I done to mine was stripped out all interior and cleaned the panels with some lacquer thinner and mad sure I cleaned the texture, then I used high build primer and then wet sanded it till smooth as a baby's a** then shot it again with high build primer then wet sanded it again till all machine lines were out and smooth. I then used base coat clear coat to finish it off it cam out great better then dupli color products ever thought about and you can beat it all you want and never flakes or chips just like your paint job on your body. I will have to get pics of it when I'm done I have the quad pod done if you guys want I can share some photos of it completely done?

I've done what you did once before on my old F150, but I probably wouldn't ever do it again... For one thing, it was WAY too much work, and then, I had it crack in a few spots after a few years...
But it DID look DAMN good.

I won't be able to tackle mine until the weather gets better, i'm assuming all the wood grain is stuck on with two sided tape so i'll have to heat it to get it off to paint

any tops on clear coating over the shiny stuff and all when it is done? I know I wasn't using the best clear but I don't think that was all of my problem. Seemed that no matter how many times I tried I could never get it to come out right. I tried reclearing over the wood grain in the middle of my dash since I did some cutting and sanding on it. Now I am thinking of just removing all the wood grain and going with some gloss or semi gloss black or something on the dash and the door panels, and fix the clear problem while I am at it.

Well I usually wet sand it again with 1500 grit, get it as smooth as possible, then shoot it again and see what happens.. what does the clear look like ,fish eyes, haze etc. yeah and sleeper mine did the same it was a chemical reaction with the base coat and the clear coat.. that suck's, cause mine did exatly that and I had to wet sand again intill smooth enough to re clear ..

Thats pretty much what I was doing was wet sanding it. I think I shot it maybe 5 times and could never really get a nice smooth cover. I tried a few times wet sanding the clear thinking I could smooth it out but then it just simply got hazy no matter what else I did. I think its mostly a fish eye, and now looking at the pics maybe its also too thick of a coating compared to the factory clear which is throwing me off too.

This is the best pic I can find that shows the imperfections. Look mostly where the light is reflecting and you can see how it looks sort of pitted (or fish eyed)
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m213/bareorn/Stereo-computer%20instal/DSC01896.jpg

Here is another view where in the picture it almost looks fine, I guess I am just not 100% happy with the outcome. I know for sure it doesn't match the factory on the drivers side portion. However I think a nice black or something will finish off all the wood grain better. Plus I sanded through the coating in a 2 small spots on the lower left of the big opening.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m213/bareorn/Stereo-computer%20instal/DSC01898.jpg

I still need to rip it all apart again and build a small filler panel in the slot where the "Power Source" plug is, will probably look similar to the bottom black part until I get a good idea on how I want the whole interior to look. I was going for factory finish this time around, but this discussion is pushing me more towards some custom stuff inside.

yeah It shouldnt look that way from what I can see it is fish eye if you can wet sand it again and lay a nice thin coat on it make sure the gun is about 2ft away from surface then wait half hour to get it tacky and then shoot another thin coat on it then if it still looks rough then try it one more time and then wet sand it..Did you prep the wood before clearing/painting? I mean really good ? you should be able to get most of the fisheye out or you can start over and get FISH EYE eliminator that helps a chit load IF you were closer I would come over and let you use my Iwata gun, thats another thing too do you have a filter right before your gun? Are you mixing it to what is noted on the clear can ? just some food for thought

I will try it again in the spring when I rip it all apart again.

Also I will admit I am a total hack  I used Eastwood's PRE (http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=126&itemType=PRODUCT) very lightly, its more of a metal prep so proabably not the best for this, and everything has been done by rattle can. My dad has a good gun that he has been using for restoring tractors and such so maybe I can get him to spray it.

It was quite a while ago that I did it, so I am not 100% sure any more on what the results were. But I remember trying the very light coats and still not getting it quite smooth. I believe this is the clear I used, its what I had and I knew I wasn't gonna get the best results but figured I would just try and get it finished, Diamond Clear (http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=619&itemType=PRODUCT)

Painting is one thing I have yet to master, but always looking to learn.

The only thing that makes a great paint job is prepping that is the most important thing about paint. As for the tractor spray gun Im not sure on that ?

Yea I tried to prep it as best as I could or that my little mind could think of lol. Mostly involved a light wet sand on the factor clear coat and to even it all up with the small portions I sanded and then wiped it down to dry it and remove any particles then sprayed.

The gun he uses not is a HVLP gravity gun I believe. He had a $400 high pressure suction style gun with the paint canister on your waste. It didn't seem to work as good as the HVLP gun and was much more of a pita to clean after use. I think the big dollar gun is now collecting dust somewhere lol while the $150 or so HVLP is getting work.

Are there any products you would recommend for the prep work and a clear that works good? Will probably be a few months, sometime in spring, before I get back into this project but I can always gather materials soon.
