Modified truck motor questions

I went to a pull near Cambridge OH this fall and have been wondering about this since. I talked to the crew of the Ohio Cat pulling truck, they were pretty friendly, anyway.

They told me that the block was billet, it was announced as a 460ci engine. I was under the ignorant assumption that these were running the 5.9 block. That was all they were allowed to disclose to me for sponsor's propriety reasons I guess.

What rotating assembly do they use, or is it also custom? Double Overtime is in this same class and I thought he was running a 7.3 block....Off Constantly and Smokinya were two others that I remember being there, didn't get a chance to talk to them.

Thanks for easing my wondering mind.

Eric Stacy is Smokinya right? He won that pull by a good distance. The Cat truck broke, like it does in most of the you tube vids.

Thanks house, now tell me what rotating mass they use.

Its a billet 5.9l built by woodruff diesel. Theres a article in the January diesel power mag.

I'm not sure if Razor's Edge ever got the billet block installed. They were having issues with it when they were trying to get it together mid summer. LAST i knew there was still an Ag block in the truck.

I believe they still have a 5.9 Cummins crank. I believe the rules state that it must swing a stock crank from the original application the block was based off of. The rules still say the base engine must be from a 1 ton or less truck. As for 460 cubes.... a little stroke and bore increase can go a long way. Guys have been doing that for years in the truck and tractor pulling arena. I have seen several cranks from multiple engines that have been the stock crank cut and sliced and welded back together for a longer stroke, also full circle cranks as well.

Well that clears it up a little Jason, Thanks. I was being too literal on the rules, a 5.9 can be made much larger within the same rotating mass.

thats what ford tractors have to do w/ the crank.

What is a full circle crank, forgive me if I sound ignorant, might be a little. :D

I know josh personaly (woodruffdiesel) and im sure he would share some info with me about the rotating assembly if i asked him.Im surprised that corey didnt share any info with ya i know on the 6.0L truck he would share on how the clutch setup was.there might be some info on the web. Google woodruff diesel. maybe that might give ya some help ?

Take a crank and ADD bobweight every where you can. this usually invovles making it a little larger and adding pieces to each end of the existing bob weights. Stop adding weight before you create any interferences. Its called a full circle crank because if you look at it from the end it looks like a complete circle, and if you put it on the floor it will roll right across it. There are many reasons to do this in the tractor pulling world. Not such a good idea in the drag racing world.

How does that affect the overall balance of the engine Jason?

You need to balance the assembly for sure, but you can do it without throwing the balance off too bad, the trick is where you add material, and how much.

man that combined with a 500lb flywheel should do some good...... that has to kill the throttle response though....LOL

I got ya Jason, one big arse internal flywheel. Inertia added to keep the mass turning longer.

Now that's a good way to move the crank, roll it across the floor! Of course, adding that much weight I doubt I'd want to carry it!

And is that pulling tractor crank Jason? That looks pretty cool.

Thats a 5.9 Cummins crank.

I should add that it is a pic a grabbed off of Woodruff Diesel's Photobucket. I knew it was there so it was easy to post.

He didn't share any info because he's not allowed. Ohio Cat, the backing sponsor, doesn't want and won't let much information out on the truck. All they say is that it's a 460 CI block, with nearly everything in it custom built for the application. About the only thing that will go into and be usable in the 5.9 motor is the crank, like Jason said...

I am not building, or even have the funding to try this. I was simply curious about it.
