What HID kit do I need for an OBS? Anyone have good experience with a particular seller for diamond clear headlights? Any information would be great.

I don't know about the HID's but I bought my diamond clear headlights off ebay. They fit good and work just fine.

for obs HIDs all you need is to get a kit with a 9007 bulb i have had hids in my 95 and 97 and both had all clear lightshttp://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/1badpsd/003-1-1.jpghttp://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/1badpsd/003-1.jpg

HID's make a huge difference in visibility. Mine are 4300K just low beam. i can see better with low beam than the old ones on high. However, i highly recommend spending the extra money to get the high beams as well

Thanks guys, I followed a link from crowz website to retro-solutions. I think, if I can talk my wife into it lol, I will be getting the 6K hi/lo 9007 kit. I will probably get the diamond clear head lights and side markers, but think I might keep the amber turn signals. Christmas is coming up right? LOL

When looking for hids remember you need bi-xenon (high and low beam). As far as I know the only kit under $200 that does that is the ones retro solutions sells.

The higher the temp the more blue they are right?

96 stroker
11-25-2008, 01:03 AM
yes ryan the higher the number the bluer or purpler the bulb will be. example a 12k is purple. 8k to 10 k is blueish and i think 5k is like pure white

Hey why we all on this light subject does anyone have any, no of any, or can get ahold of the obs clear cab lights... need them bad. They arent made any more. 3rd Gen. Dodge cab lights line up in the same holes on the cab I hear. Shaped differently but about the only shot you have at having clear cab lights.

I thought the higher the number(10K vs 4.3K) the brighter the output? Guess not though?

I'm thinking of getting some retro solutions. What do you think about 8k? Too much blue?

Does the wire harness(9007) plug into the ballast then something runs to the headlamps for the HID's? Not exactly sure how it works.

Kind of. THe key here is to get light that is as close to sunlight as you can. Sunlight ambiant is 5600 while tungsten halogen light is 3200. For best optical clarity for your eyes, stay as close to 5600 as you can and try not to go over that. Much higher than that and your eyes will start to strain like when you look at UV light. The human eyes like light as close to 5600 as it can be.

That number is actually the color of the light in degrees Kelvin.

So basically what your saying is if its too much it may effect how well your vision is while driving?

I see what your saying just not sure how to put it in my own words.

In hids, 4300k is what stock aka factory hids are and are considered to be the brightest of the colors. The higher you go the more of a blue tinge you get up to about 6500k then it goes twards purple.

Retro solutions has a chart on their site with the colors shown.

Real life chart 4300 which becomes 4500 after youve had them a bit is about as bright as it gets :D

Remember whatever you get climbs in kelvin after you run them awhile.

So figure 200k more over what you buy.

I'm not sure if you're still wondering about how to remove the headlights and what not, but I can get some pics and explain it to you. I did mine today....I got the 5000k, hi/lo kit and it's pretty badass.

I'll have to get some. Tomorrow afternoon after work. I don't have any of the actual removal but it's pretty straight forward....I'll be sure to take pics of the two bolt locations on each side that are hidden and a PITA but the rest is done with a phillips screwdriver and a 5/16" socket/ratchet.....and maybe a grinder with a flapper wheel or a dremmel tool. The replacement headlight housing wasn't quite factory spec....but oh well. Like I said thought, I'll get a write up going of some sorts.

Yep as long as you pull the batteries, the headlights are pretty easy to do.

Haha, true. I need to do some shopping...Luckily for me these were my gifts. LOL

I guess I can try to explain the process in better detail so you can have a better idea...

1) Remove them batteries....they're evil voodoo boxes....

2) Behind the turn signal lights, on the inside...There are two 7/16" nuts in holes on opposite sides of each other. There's two per light and they're a real pain to feel around for, especially if you have big fingers...

3) Remove all the screws off the headlight/turn/marker light assemblies and the grill....there's also one under the Ford sybol...

4) With the screws gone, you should be able to take the marker and turn signal light housings out a little and get the lights out.

5) With the grill off, look at the outer sides of the headlights and you'll see two 5/16" bolts, two more on the inner side. (On the front, inside the recessed portion where all the radiator stuff is visible.) One below them in the bottom facing you, one in the middle and the same five for the other side...So you'll have 11 of them.

6) You can now remove the whole thing with the head lights...Now the headlights are held in by some weird tabs, I found it easy to get a snap ring tool and spread them apart and use a flat head screw driver to get them off....

7) The turn signal housing is held on by three screws and the marker light is held on by two 7/16 " bolts.

Just reverse the removal for the install. :poke:

One thing I would check though is the new headlight housings....where the bulbs go in. I found mine to be too deep, like a 1/32" or so and it prevented me from putting the HID bulbs in. They were fine on the old housings....so I had to trim mine down. Either way it's all good. Pay attention to where the adjuster screws go too...

I'll get those pics up...had some late work tonight. Oh well, work's work I suppose.
