K/N air filter FWIW

I couldn't remember when I put the K&N air filter in. Approx a year ago if not longer. I wanted to measure restriction before cleaning them. Pulled out air filter resriction guage on side of air box & installed rubber adpt with hose to a manometer water column type. dirty filter findings=
@ idle = 0"
@ 2000 rpm approx 49mph = 0 - 1/4"
@ dead stop -30ish mph WOT = max 2.75"

Then clean filters as kit recomended, air dry over night, & oil, & let sit, per instructions.

All readings the same! (with the clean filters)

The filters looked pretty dirty with lots of bug & crud in pleats & even a cigarette butt in box!
So long made short, I was disappointed to see no gain, but glad to see not that much restriction either. I've seen some guys say the boots will colapse when at WOT. I dont see this posible at 3" of vacuum.

This was done on my E350 van with dp tune on tow 40. I forgot to flip to the higher settings. (they seem slower anyhow, & the tow 40 trips the overboost easier)
Maybe when I get more time, I still have old paper elements. That are only about 3-6 months old, when I put the K&N's in. It would be interesting to see how they compare.

Well FWIW I would ditch the K&N, there have been more than too many engine ruined by them passing too much dirt. Good air filtration is one vital part to these engines lives, other wise your turbo is just sand blasting your cyls.

Ya K&N's have very little restriction, because there is usually very little filtering media to get in the air's way! When I look through one and it reminds me of looking through a screen door, it makes me wonder about those little tiny dirt particles that the filter isn't catching.

In several of my own personal tests, those very small dirt particles were found to be in the intake, after the filter.

I will never use a K&N on anything that I value, but that's my opinion.

The amsoil product sounds good! I wish I knew about them before I got the K&N's. I was tempted to use the dirt bike foam filter for a prefilter & clean evry 6k miles. If my water column shows no increased flow resriction.
