'97 E-SuperDuty, Instrument Cluster and TC Issues

Hello all,

Not much of an intro post, but I'm stuck....

I have a '97 E-SuperDuty shuttle bus with the PSD and E4OD. I use this to haul my race car on an open trailer. I've only had it about 6 months and have had no problems until recently (I love this truck I might add). En rout to Florida from Atlanta a few weeks ago, I was cruising at about 70 with the cruise control on and, suddenly, the truck surged and let loose a healthy clank from the transmission. At that point, the truck would free rev and the speedo showed 0. I coasted to the shoulder and stopped. First and second worked (still with the speedo at 0), but Drive would only free rev. I limped to an exit and summarily to a transmission shop. I had the code pulled and it indicated TC slip. After the truck sat for a while, it drove normally and the speedo worked. The fluid was a normal red/pink color, but smelled obviously burnt and left a smudge of metallic grey residue with every wipe on a white rag.

Long story short, I left the truck with the shop and had them rebuild the box replace the TC. Three weeks later, the trans and TC have been replaced and they still have the truck. Now the shop says that a problem with the instrument cluster is causing an intermittent issue with the speed signal from the VSS to the PCM causing a problem with the shift points and TC lockup. Looking through AllData, it appears that the ECU and cluster share the signal from the VSS (instead of the cluster conditioning and retransmitting the signal to the PCM).

In short, am I being strung along? Has anyone heard of a similar issue regarding a fault instrument cluster causing problem with shift points and lockup?

Sorry for the long winded post and thanks for taking a look. :)

Just a bit of an update from the shop....

He states that the transmission shifts hard, goes in and out of lockup, and will not shift into overdrive.

VSS?

I picked up an extra instrument cluster to try as well.
