Turbo ?

I've got a guy that wants to buy the Hypermax turbo kit for his 1985 6.9 IDI and I was wondering if there was anything else he would need to buy to make it work...?

The other option seems to be the banks sidewinder kit and it's a very complete looking kit. Includes a plugin and pyro gauges etc...

Also, should he look into getting Headstuds since this was a naturally aspirated diesel to begin with?

I'm gonna bump this up and maybe get some help.

I think as far as turbo kits on these engines go the Hypermax is about the best. It sits in the back & doesn't take up the room like the factory, ATS or Banks kit do. I think it was Greenbeast on here had a 6.9L with a Hypermax & he was happy with it.

Pretty much they will give you everything that you need. Alot of guys on Oil Burners run the Hypermax with good results. It's non wastegated but you won't over boost it with these engines.

The Hypermax kit seems to be the best choice amongst the 6.9/7.3L NA crowd. We have seen alot of Banks and ATS kits come through as well. Call Ron and ask him to tell you about the performance of their kit.

I've still got a Hypermax turbo 7.3IDI and have worked on several. Nice kit, works well. Nothing but what is in the kit is needed. Keep the boost level reasonable and you will not have any issues at all.

Define reasonable and what other mods to go with it? It's a mechanical pump, so what about turning it up or something???

You'll obviously want to turn the pump up as a turbo without fuel to spin it will not yeild any additional power.

I'd keep the boost below 15psi.

No other mods nessasry if you buy the kit. There are always things you can do if you want. The kit is pretty good on it's own right.

Might give the pump a slight turn, make sure it's timed right & leave it alone. The more you try to get more ponys out of these things the worse off you are.

If you do decide to go with studs you can get an ARP kit PN #150-4069 Summit could probably order them or directly from ARP or a place of your choice. Looks like they run around $240 for the kit.

Stock superduty turbo? I mean it's the same displacement engine turning the same general rpm range.

There are about 2-3 trucks over on Oil Burners running the old non wastegated turbo off a 94-97 7.3L. Said boost is only about 10lbs max but the hard part was making all the plumbing & oil lines & pedistal.

You'd want to run a SD turbo if anything with the .84 housing.

If you got the pedistal & plumbing setup right could you run a Holset from a 6.5L Chevy?

You can run any kind of turbo from anything if you want to bolt it on. Why bother?

If you wanted to not go the easy route and get a kit that has everything in it you needed there are far easier turbo's to adapt than something from a Detroit or SD.

I agree with ya there, unless someone wanted to really prove a point or try something diffrent.

I had a 85 6.9 with Banks turbo. I had bored and sleeved new worked heads, springs, lifters everything. New pump (you can turn them up a little), rebuilt sticks. Maxed at 5 lbs boost pulling hard and moving slow. It just wasnt worth it. The 6.9's arent built to be ...built. If he blows a head gasket he'll have a hard time finding a good head. You cant do much shaving and no decking. Most crack and warp when you just look at them (once they are opened.) He would do better to just get a 7.3 and work it then put a turbo, exhaust and intake. He'll be a whole lot happier. Just my opinion based on time and money spent.

There is something wrong if you could only get 5lbs of boost. I've seen the Banks kits easily pull 15lbs with the pump set accordingly. The late model 6.9's actually had the best blocks, much better than any of the 7.3 IDI's which are very prone to cracking liner walls with turbo's.

The early 6.9's are basically throw-away blocks and are easily identifiable by looking at the front of the block once you start the tear down.
