Secret to Longevity?

Hey all. So here I am around 134K miles on my truck. Done some mods, (see sig), and looks good for twin pumps next week. Along with my desire to land between 400 and 430hp, with as much torque as we can put to the ground, this is my daily driver, I would like this engine to last as long as possible. My theory is with the engine operating at greater effeciencies, it doesn't have to work as hard when I am towing or hauling. Under normal driving conditions I just cruise, don't take off too fast. On the freeway I go around 70 most of the time @ 2200rpms. Once in a while I like to go fast but have never actually launched at the strip, although does sound really fun. Oil changes no later then 5K for life of truck, except first one which was around 500 miles.

So with that said, as I am seeing 400k+ out there, how many miles can we get with these type mods and driving habits? Are there some other tips you guys with big hp can throw my way? In addition to a truck that moves and can tow without strain I would like it to last.

Kainers has 290,000+ on his original pmr motor.
Oh and he's running upwards of 420 horse:D

I think your engine will last as long as a stock one if its kept under
500hp and maintained regularly . I put close to 30k miles on mine in about a year.

Well I dont have over 400 hp but I do have 302k on my 95 with a chip and fuel system for the past 100k and ever since I straight piped it at 185k I cant keep my foot out of it and now with stacks:D

Just kep the trucks PM up and it should last along time

I believe I have seen him driving through town. There are a lot of nice trucks around here. I will keep an eye out and honk at him. That is always fun.

LOL Mike is not hard on his motor... Just the interior, paint, tranny, wheels, tires... O hell he drives the piss out of it...

I have 130k on this one... no issues, 270k on my 99 no real issues other then a melted #7 (my fault), 260k on my 97 with no issues and NO GAUGES!!! 310k on the 95 when she went down the road... no issues...

I would like to see his truck sometime. It looks and sounds very nice. Lots of power and torque. I hear he breaks things here and there. Test the limits. Sounds cool.

I have seen his truck it isnt much to look at but it hauls ass :ford:. iIt was really dirty and beat up when I rode in it I imgaine it will stay that way. What has he broke?

I would be careful useing and exception to the rule as the rule for building an engine. Yeah that truck seems to be doing very well with the mods it has and the PMRs. But it hasn't been proven that they will last that well consistantly on several trucks. I think he's either got a better than average set of PMRs, or he just doesn't realize he's actually got forged rods.:D I'm sure the tuneing has a little to do with it as well. I know he puts tons of miles on but I'm not sure how much of it is actually foot to the floor hard miles. Long drives up the freeway are about the best kind of miles you can put on an engine.

I don't think just because you don't have to put your foot in it so much and it doesn't "seem" like the engine is working all that hard that you are putting any actual less stress on it. To move the same load it still has to exert the same downward force on the piston. If it works more efficiently then it just uses less fuel to do it and when you have it set up to inject much more fuel like with larger injectors you are just getting the same amount of fuel out at a lower throttle setting which makes it seem like it's not working as hard. The engine doesn't know any different until you put your foot to the floor and dump a TON of fuel in it. Then it knows it's getting beat on a lot harder. Something else is that the lower the rpm you run it the more stress it puts on the parts. It's like walking up a steep hill taking big steps or a gradual hill taking smaller steps. At a higher rpm it's takeing smaller steps and exerting less force on the pistons per stroke to get the work done. Lower rpm it is takeing fewer bigger steps and has to exert more force to get the load up the hill. Kind of makes you think about all those guys that seem to think they need to pull at 1500 rpm just because "it's a diesel and they make torque." Let that thing rev! :redspotdance:

I'll say this, I have seen many, many stock trucks it to 300-400K.

And I've seen many modded trucks not make near as far.


Roll the dice and jump in the deep end. Have the money to pay to play.

Spend most of my time around 2k rpms 2200-2500 on the freeway. Between 1800-2750 most of the time. I stay out of OD if not going over 55. This is where I find my truck runs best.

Geoff, unfortunately, Kainers has PMR's. We inspected them while he was getting his pumps installed.:(

Na... we just found a secret to PMR survival... DRIVE THE PISS OUT OF IT...

Well I guess when you drive the piss out of it it's going to usually be in the higher rpm ranges so maybe that's what's helping it! :D
